To me, one of the more amazing parts of this film is the snarling engine sound (most likely dubbed in) as the BMW E34 drifts sideways entering onto the ringroad running along the River Seine near the beginning of the 2nd chase. The sound just emphasizes some great car control and driving that obviously took place.

I also added some behind the scenes pictures of some of the cars used in the making of the film: /vehicle_1896-BMW-535i-E34-1991.html

Easily the best chase movie I've ever seen. I see several reruns just to see the chases. :-)

Well I just tend to rewatch the chases scenes on their own, I've only seen the film a couple of times, although I think it's quite underrated, critics didn't seem to give it that much praise apart from the car chases, but it has a great cast, and it's quite a good espionage thriller. I must watch it again sometime.

Even though there are no American made cars used in any chase scenes this is one of my favorite chase movies. It can't top White Lightning, Vanishing Point or The Blues Brothers but its still a pretty bitchin' movie.

Is it former GDR cruise ship Arkona?

This movie has some of the best chases I've seen in a long while. Almost inspires me to make my own little car chase action thriller.

Yep. Rover 82x, before 1991 facelift.
Can be clearly seen one cut farther on where it's in full frontal view, including the brand logo on the hood:

^ It's a good spec - sunroof, headlight washers, body colour mirrors, large rear headrests, alloys from early (827) Sterling. No tints, but early Sterling didn't have them - the only possible hiccup I can see is that Sterling started with 2-tone lower door area in dark grey, but unclear if they all had it or it was only an option. And French ones might have been different.

No, this must be the Arkona's very similar-looking somewhat-sister ship Astor. Both were built at HDW for the same customer, but the Arkona only joined the Transocean fleet as Astoria in 2002, long after Ronin was filmed.

One of the most remarkable aspects is the chase through Paris.
Most car chases juxtapose scenes in different locations in an illogical way, but here, the route through Paris made good sense. Except that, given the number of police officers in the capital (*), such a long chase was not very realistic, especially during the day!
And now, ten years on, it would be virtually impossible given the changes made to traffic flow (narrower streets).

(*) Only encountering one police ZX... Please don't make me laugh!
