Les Milles was an internment camp in South of France (near Marseilles) where German and Austrian citizen (and some former Spanish Republican) where kept to avoid spy or sabotage activities. In fact, most of them where German speaking people who flew the Reich due to their political activities or religion. In the last days of June, the commandant tried to avoid the Nazi could capture those refugees and hire a train to reach the Atlantic coast and so, allow them to board a ship and escape a tragic fate.
