It was my first job on a feature film and I was given the roll of period car coordinator. I was 25 at the time and had a blast. I spent six weeks in Tucson Arizona during pre production going around to car shows and meeting collectors and making deals so that I had a stock of cars available to me for the run of the show as well as specialty cars for specific characters.

The best story was about a specialty car for the character Mr. Mosel and I was having a hard time finding the right vehicle for the director to OK. I took a scouting photo of a 1938 Cadillac that was in a an abandoned field and of douse he says, “That’s it”, thats mr models car”, then when I went back to find out about the car it was rusted out, had no motor in it and the interior was shot. I bought the chassis for a few hundred dollars and then spent the rest of the pre production and most of the production time restoring the car to be featured vehicle in the movie.

The first day it was planned to work, it said “Mr models car day exterior” on the call sheet and I assumed that meant that the car was online yogin to be seen from the outside (it was my first movie) , low and behold the entire scene was ion and around the car including people getting in and out of it. The car ran, but barely had an interior and no seats whatsoever.

They did the seen with the driver sitting on a box and the producer never let me forget that whole thing.

I was one of the local Tucson vintage car owners contacted about including my car in Desert Bloom. My then like-new 1951 Nash Ambassador Brougham with a blue top and a light gray lower color was filmed as a background drive by (with me driving and wearing a period hat). I have yet to see the film so I don’t know if this car was included in the final product or edited out.

I un-archived the comments as I find useful to keep them here, but I've hidden the pictures in a "spoiler" tag (visible when clicking on it) as you dispatched them to the related vehicle pages ;)
