I'm uneasy with the Chrysler 180 being grouped with some of these others ... But I can see the link that they were all unloved except by those who loved them - and in some cases still do. And the non-believers tend to think they are ridiculous objects of affection. |

For many yers it was seen as a unreliable, too thirsty and obstructed car. Indeed caused by the Volkswagen dealers and garages itself! They didn't like the K 70, because at first it was only a stepchild, non something own. Plus the in a plenty of VW-employees-brains deeply rooted thinking, that a real VW has to have an aircooled engine in the back. Indeed a lot of VW-mechanics was totally overwhelmed with the new technology ![]() In fact nothing is really obstucted at the K 70 - VW has made much worse cobblework ad the 411/412, the 1500/1600 Typ 3 and many more models ![]() No kidding: I have a VW-internal dealers-guide in my collection, where really was said, that they shouldn't offer the K 70 too positve, expecially not the space inside and of the trunk, the good heating, the modern suspension-technology and some more details - because if they would point out that too much, VW cannot sell any 412 any more! Because this cobbled junk-box was much worse in all of these items... |

For a plenty of reasons. Mainly, that the plant in Salzgitter, where the K 70 was built, was erected only for this model - and finished, when the production was still running. Plus the new technology for VW-employees, the missing farmyard-smell, and also the fact, that its construction was more complicated and elaborate as of the other VW's - also of the VW's of the following generations. THE NSU-developing-eningeers had a different way of thinking than the VW-engineers, they weren't trained very much on reliable, but low-cost-efficiency-production. They wanted to make a more upmarket-made car, with higher-class materials. Indeed, VW was during the production-times of the K 70 always busy to press down the production-costs. Many parts were becoming cheaper made, made by less and ccheaper material. Rustfree V2a-bumpers, as mentioned in the ver first brochures, and regularly standard for the RO 80, the other 1967+ NSU's and the Audi [F103], too? No way. There are dozens of more examples... |

I used to be fascinated by the K70 - the Ro80 was one of my childhood dream cars; I had a few weeks in hospital and my parents scoured the libraries of Birmingham to find car books for me. They found an old copy of World Car Caatalogue 1969 with its little supplement of last-minute releases after the main printing, which had full details and photos of the NSU K70. The idea of a car that never existed but was fully completed was a great story. |

I got it in Antwerpen from a Dutch vendor for 20 €. So it absorbed my fuel costs of that trip ![]() |

Yes - the same, but the English language edition had different cover and layout. Not sure now if it had adverts. Looks as if I'll have to enter another Saved Search into ebay. And somewhere in this there's another link to the Chrysler 180 - development of a UK Humber version as the C-Car was nearly complete when it was handed to Simca and became their 949 project instead. While there are photos of early C-Car mock-ups, I've never found pictures of the Humber in its later stages before the axe fell, and my father who worked for Rootes/Chrysler UK was so frustrated when the bland 180 emerged instead of the exciting car which Coventry had designed. |

If the narratives from the past are correct, the "K" shall stand for "Kolben" - "piston". But which is not really correct, as the Wankel-Scheibe (= "disc") is technicially a piston, too. |

I'll let you know when it arrives. My last encounter was 30+ years old, and I don't yet know if this one still has the little slip-in supplement which I think contained the stop-press NSU K70 page. UK editions were separate publications under what I assume was a global franchising allocation, and did not have adverts for the years I've seen from 60s and 70s. Due eBay the prices for such literature became lower, compared with the 90ies, but a better possibility are still spare parts-markets and automobilia-swapmeets. Sure, the professional dealers are keeping the high prices from pre-eBay-times, but sometimes you can make nice chance finds, usually at private sellers or dealers for other things, who have no idea about this specific stuff. Old "auto katalog"-magazines are generally very expensive, but last year I could buy for Raul1983 the all 1970ies-issues for 5€ each, an extreme good price. WCC 69 has finally arrived after various adventures and does have the little Stop Press insert with NSU K70, but ..... it's not what I remembered - only a small side view photo and 17 lines of specification/data, which I imagine would be shared across all other WCC 1969 editions. No narrative, discussion, history, adverts etc. I have a picture in my mind of an English language article on the NSU with a head-on view with lights on, but this is not it and I can't think where/what else it was apart from a long time ago ..... perhaps something wider about cars that were pulled before launch with the NSU as one of a few featured and in a magazine not a book, but that's as far as I can think. |
