Is it really a Porsche 911 replica?

As has been said, it looks like it's a genuine 911 (my guess is on an early one - late 60's, maybe early 70's) with a body kit.

So they wrecked a rare car instead of a much less rare car with a body kit?

As the pictures indicate, not an actual 935.... And in 1981, an early 911 wasn't nearly as rare as they are today.

Actually it is an early car, not a 935. You can tell by the tailights pre- 1969, also the window frames with the vent windows. And in the pictures of the car crashing and the flares flying off, you can see where the original quarter panel as cut and the fiberglass 935 fender grafted on. Also the front tub looks stock in that picture.

Definetly a early 911 (901 Series), trimmed to look as 935

I think I remember reading somewhere it was an old 911, but they had used origional 935 pannels to dress it up. If that is true they would probably be worth more than the car by now.....

I helped build this car for the movie, Cannonball Run. The car started life as 912 not a 911. I worked for a Porsche salvage yard / repair shop in atlanta georgia. John Paul Sr., the race car driver came into the shop to buy the car. He had a man purse full of cash. I believe he was on his way to the 24 hours of Le mans. I had to bring the car from the yard using a fork lift. It did not run. We got the car running and removed the front fenders, hood and rear deck lid, per instructions from the movie people. A few days after the movie personal who picked up the car, the car was returned with instructions to put a 911 engine in the car, it wasn't powerful enough to use for the stunts they had in mind. I was not a welder at the time but we had a man that worked in the shop that could do just about anything. We called him Pappy Tate. He welder motor mounts and whatever other work that was necessary to install a 911 engine. I had several engines that had been pulled from wrecked cars that we store on pallets for resale in a warehouse. I can't remember if it was an "S" or "T" model engine, but it seemed to please the stunt crew. About a week later the car came back to us, I suppose that was part of the deal made with John Paul. The car had been painted completely with a brown primer. My first thought was, how will this look in the movie. BTW the car didn't have a scratch on it. The movie people explained how they faked the crash by using steel cables attached to the body parts that were supposed to come off the car as if it had collided with the State Trooper cars at the road block. All the interior was gone. John Paul said a lot if the crew had taken things like the steering wheel, the seats, basically whatever Burt Reynolds had touched, out of the car. The only thing I retrieved for myself was the Porsche hood emblem that you can't actually see in the movie, but that's all I could find that I wanted at the time. 30 plus years later I came across the badge and decided to sell it on Ebay. I brought a surprising sum and ended up going back to a gentleman in Germany.
