the first photo, and the set with the Mustung are actually 1971 Montegos, the black and white police car is a 1970 model. |

Halicki kept the Montego used as 1-Baker-11 as he did Eleanor; it is seen outside the Cinerama Dome in "The Junkman" behind the Mustang. I wonder if it is still around today as Eleanor is? That would be sweet. It was also still in running condition. In "Gone", after filming the jump scene at the end (and 1-Baker-11's big crash), they went back and filmed all the close-ups of Phil Woods and Butch Stockton driving at the construction zone and other areas. In behind-the-scenes photos you can see them filming through the windshield with the front of the car completely trashed. |

The green Montego, seen driving on two wheels in the sixth thumbnail, is a different car involved at a couple of points early in the chase. |

Would LAPD really spring for a Mercury as an undercover car? Wouldn't an LTD suffice? |
◊ 2012-11-07 01:33 |
Bear in mind that the LAPD also used such Mercurys as squad cars (though not, I believe 1971 models) so would most likely use the same cars for both purposes. |

Didn't the LAPD order Montegos in 1970? Still doesn't add up, as 1-Baker-11 is a Long Beach undercover car. Might not even be a '71. Given the front-end damage before the chase even started, and knowing Halicki's penchant for piecing together stuff, it might be a kludge with a different front clip. -Kurt -- Last edit: 2012-11-07 01:40:35 |

Butch Stockton stunt driver and defacto actor. I always loved these 70-71 Montegos. This was an unmarked police car. Commentary track said it was a 428 car? Or would it have been a 429 in this year of a car? -- Last edit: 2013-07-30 18:32:04 |

This Montego can be seen briefly in the 1982 movie Junkman from the rooftop scene before the actor falls off. Its behind Eleanor. Gone In 60 Seconds painted on the trunk. Halicki must have kept it as a promotion car for the movie. |

/vehicle_358071-Mercury-Montego-1970.html Yes LAPD had some black and white Montegos. There is one or two black and white Montegos in this movie. In the dirt chase scene. There were actually 3 unmarked Montegos in this movie. This one, a tan one, and a green one that goes on its side early in the chase which could easily be mistaken for 1 Baker 11 but it is not. Commentary track of DVD backs this up. Black and white Montegos also were on the TV show Police Story a few seasons in I remember. -- Last edit: 2013-07-30 18:39:40 |

No, the 429 was not available on the Montego in '71. I can believe it had a police-spec 428. |

If you look verrrrry closely,it's got a '71 Grille, but '70 headlight extentions? And as I recall, you'd see these 1970/71 Montego's on the road all the time 'in the day' with busted out center grilles??? And yes,LAPD did have '70 Montegos, another show you'll see them in is in the background on "Adam-12"? |

Halicki didn't confine his front-end swaps to Mustangs for this film, apparently. The hood has no Mercury badge on it either, which indicates that the hood is a '70 as well (1971 moved the badge to the hood because of the eggcrate grille). From the looks of the front end damage, chances are the center of the grill, the nose trim, and one end cap were affected, and only the grill center was swapped. It's pretty safe to say that the hood wasn't swapped. With that said, I propose the following revision: 1-Baker-11 is a 1970 Mercury Montego, not a 1971. -Kurt -- Last edit: 2014-07-18 04:16:46 |

The two Long Beach Montegos together. The green one (which goes up on two wheels) is unit 1-Baker-5. The female dispatcher announces it in a line cut from the DVD releases (new soundtrack). The first Dodge Coronet that responds with it is "unit 10".![]() |

See notes above. 1970 with 1971 grill. -Kurt |

That first picture of the cream Montego shows damage between the driver fender and door and it doesnt look to be on the remaining action shots all the way up until when the cream Montego hits the black and white. http://pics.imcdb.org/12851/snap2473.jpg -- Last edit: 2016-08-05 20:01:50 (Neon) |

They did a real poor job, trying to hide the POV -camera in the backseat of "1-Baker-11". |
◊ 2017-03-13 07:45 |
That's why they inserted a shot of Phil Woods (the passenger) switching it on and announcing the same; they couldn't hide it so they made out that it was meant to be there to record the pursuit for evidence, as happens today. |

They Grafted the '73 Grille on the Mustang because he bought All the Cars in '72 at Auction but they Sat for 2 years b4 filming Started (All on Sundays) |

Yes, we know this. That doesn't have a bearing on Halicki's 1-Baker-11 front end swap. -- Last edit: 2023-09-26 13:18:52 |
