![]() 1981 made-for-TV historic drama about the Little Rock Integration Crisis of 1957, where nine black students were allowed to attend Central High School which up to this point had been whites-only. Apparently there was nothing better to do in 1957 than harass black students as so many people of Little Rock, Arkansas showed up to protest and object to the integration that President Eisenhower himself forced the Arkansas National Guard, some of those enlisted against segregation, to escort the students to school for their protection, marking a turning part in desegregation. These students, who came to be known at the Little Rock Nine, were Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals, all of whom in November 1999 were bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal by President Bill Clinton. As of 2025, seven members of the Nine are still alive, Thomas having passed away in 2010 and Mothershed having left us last year. This film is based on the memoir of the crisis entitled Crisis at Central High by Elizabeth Huckaby, who was assistant principal at the time. She is portrayed here by Joanne Woodward. The high school's principal is played by Charles Durning. Calvin Levels plays Ernest Green, Riona Martin plays Carlotta Walls, and Regina Taylor plays Minniejean Brown. As this is a TV film that only had 90 minutes to tell it's story, the rest of the Little Rock Nine are not focused on. Filmed on location at the actual Central High, with some scenes shot at Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas. Two-star yellow pick-up too poorly visible to list ![]() ![]() Oddly not the first 1981 TV film I've added involving the National Guard, the first being Kent State, which aired only four days after this! Set during the 1957-'58 school year, which was September 1957 through June 1958. Airdate: February 4th, 1981 -- Last edit: 2025-09-30 16:22:28 |
