The steam engine is a Japanese National Railways 9600-class locomotive, built from 1913 to 1925. These were among the very LAST steam locomotives working in Japan when the railway system dieselized entirely by early 1976. This one was probably very old, doing branch line freight hauling in Hokkaido, and on its final legs when they blew it up for the movie. -- Last edit: 2014-07-18 22:46:17 |

JNR did not co-operate with the production. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bullet_Train#Filming |

As Gag already mentioned, JNR infamously didn't help with the production of this film and instead constantly did the opposite. Other things they did were: When negotiations were held with both JNR and Toei, JNR wanted to change the name of the film (The Shinkansen's Big Explosion) to avoid bad PR. Originally JNR was going to help Toei with filming the movie, until they stopped with 80% of their cooperation of the film during February 1975, and by April they had fully pulled out support for the film (this was the reasoning behind the models used in the final film, they weren't allowed to be near any of the real O-Series Shinkansen's). They also had to build their own full-scale Shinkansen's interior, which delayed production aswell -- Last edit: 2025-05-16 00:09:26 |
