This and the trip down the Severn Valley in the cab of Flying Scotsman were undoubtedly the two best programmes on British TV over Christmas.

This film was adapted from Raymond Briggs' graphic autobiography about the lives of Briggs' parents from meeting each other in 1928 through to their marriage in 1930 and their deaths in 1971.

This film also featured archive recordings that were made during the Interwar Period through to the World War II, and post-World War II Britain:

The Munich Agreement - The agreement talks between British Prime Minster, Neville Chamberlain and the German Führer, Adolf Hitler over allowing German annexation of the German Sudetenland Region of Czechoslovakia that occurred in Munich from the 29th to the 30th September 1938.

Invasion of Poland - Germany's invasion of Poland on the 1st September 1939, resulting in the outbreak of WWII on the morning of 3rd September 1939.

Operation Piped Piper - Mass evacuation of children from the cities to the rural areas from September 1939 to September 1944.

The Fall of France - Germany's invasion of France and the low countries from the 10th May to the 25 June 1940.

Operation Dynamo - Mass evacuation of both British and French soldiers from Dunkirk, France from the 26th May to the 4th June 1940 (as shown in the thumbnail).

Battle of Britain - Series of air battles between the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe in the skies over Southern Britain from the 10th July to 31st October 1940.

The Blitz - A series of nighttime bombing raids over London and other British Cities by the Luftwaffe from the 7th September 1940 to the 11th May 1941.

Operation Barbarossa - Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union from the 22nd June to the 5th December 1941.

The D-Day Landings - Mass invasion of Europe and Germany by the Allies on morning of the 6th June 1944.

The V1 Rocket Attacks - Mass attacks by V1 Rockets on British cities from the 13th June 1944 to the 29th March 1945.

VE Day - The mass celebration across Great Britain and Europe to mark the end of World War II in Europe on the 8th May 1945.

The Premiership of Clement Attlee - The leadership of Clement Attlee as British Prime Minister from the 26th July 1945 to the 26th October 1951.

The Atomic Bombs - The mass atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan by the US Air Force on 6th and the 9th August 1945, resulting in the end of World War II in the Pacific, and the overall end of World War II on the 2nd September 1945.
