this is not a bel air it´s an impala only impala sport coupe had this roof with the false airoutlet. and three taillights.(6). |
◊ 2008-01-17 20:24 |
In 1958 Impala was a trim of the Bel Air, it became its own model only in 1959. |

bullfidde is right. In 1958 there were the models Bel Air - Biscayne - Impala (from 'cheap' to luxury or from no chrome to al lot of chrome) Del Ray - a lot of chrome but not as luxury as the Impala The Impala was the top model of the three (6 taillights) and a lot of more chrome trim than Bel Air and Biscayne (they had 4 tailligts) |

According to my info the Chevrolet-range in 1958 had the Delray, Biscayne and Bel Air (cheap, middle and top of te line) with the name Impala used for extra luxury Bel Airs, oly in hardtop coupe and convertible. The car shown here doesn't have the wide V on front of the bonnet, so this will be a 6 cylinder version, therefore [1747] (or if that V is just missing and the car does have a V8, which might be audible in the movie, it's a [1847]. |

Sorry, what do these numbers mean? This car definately had a V8 in it and was mildly customised involving removal of some external badges. Wikipedia describes the 1958 Impala as:- 'sporty trim package created for Bel Air coupes and convertibles' 'the Impala became a separate model in 1959' whether that means it should be known as a Belair or Impala, i'm not entirely sure.. -- Last edit: 2008-01-28 07:17:38 |

DynaMike. This is a mild-custom. The hood-ornament is removed and the holes filled (nosed), -same with the deck lid (decked). The doorhandles are also shaved and the same with the impala-badges and crossed flags on the rearquarters and chrome-louvers on the sides of the fenders (just behind the headlights). The stock taillights are switched for 59 Cadillac units. It also rides om chrome reversed wheels and on a rake, has a very mild custom paitjob with some red scallops and fogging and a nice, white ticknroll interior (which Debbie really loves..). Also this was definatly a V8-car, -a 348 to be exact. Oh, and for 1958, Impala was part of the Bel Air range, but the 2d HT Bel Air and 2d HT Impala are two different bodystyles as the Impala has a lower roofline amongst other things. Impala only came as 2d HT and 2d convertible. Chevrolet shares much of the body with Pontiac in 1958. Pontiac had a counterpart to the Impala in the Bonneville. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Steve (Ron Howard): I've decided I'm gonna let you take care of my car for me while I'm away, at least until Christmas. See, I'm coming back for a couple of weeks at Christmas. Now, I've got some very simple instructions for you, here's the keys. First of all, only 30-weight Castrol-R. Now, I've written the tyre pressure and stuff on a pad in the glove... are you listening? Kurt (Richard Dreyfuss): Hey, what's wrong? Are you crying? Toad (Charles Martin Smith): I can't believe it! I don't know what to say! I'll love and protect this until death to us part! This is a super-fine machine! This might even be better than Darryl Starbird's Superfleck Moon... it is! It's better than Darryl Starbird's Superfleck Moonbird! Toad manages to pick up a nice girl in it: Debbie (Candy Clark): Is this your car? Toad: Yeah. I'm Terry the... well, they usually call me Terry the Tiger. Debbie: It's really tough-looking. Can it lay rubber? Toad: Yeah, I got a 327 Chevy in it, it's got 6 Strombergs. Debbie: That's bitchin' tuck-and-roll, you know I really love the feel of tuck-and-roll upholstery. Toad: You do? Well come in, I'll let you feel it. I mean you can touch it if you want... um, I'll let you feel the upholstery. Debbie: OK. (She gets in) Debbie: Peel out. Toad: Peel out. I just love it when guys peel out. (Toad revs the engine and does a bit of wheel-spin) -- Last edit: 2009-06-16 01:15:54 |

I thought this car was a Del-Ray |
◊ 2009-06-13 23:01 |
Absolutely beyond all doubt a 1958 Chevy Impala, with six '59 caddy tailights glued over the original Chevy ones. |
◊ 2009-11-20 05:53 |
Problem is, if you look at the car featured on the web sites dedicated to it, Toad was telling tall tales with the 327 and 6 strombergs as the car had a factory 348 big block V8 with 3 dueces. It was a 1958 Bel Air Impala Sport Coupe. I am in love with these cars. The 59 Tail lights were clayed onto the 58 Chevy tail lights and yes the trim had all been shaved. |

I agree NOT a Bel aire, It is an Impala which is the top of the line model starting in 1958, not a trim level either. |
◊ 2009-12-30 23:08 |
Rigormortor: Impala was a trim level of the Bel Air in 1958, and didn't become a separate model until 1959. |

Definitely an Impala |

ahh nice tidbit hopefully this will stop the argument ensuing |

Although the stock Bel Air/Impala would have had a 283 or 348, it is entirely possible that for some reason this car's character could have been modified to have the 'Corvette' 327 Steve says it has, and with the 6-pack Toad says it has. What I want to know is how a 17-year-old in 1962 has a bitchin' 4-year-old car with that level of customisation done to it! |

I just asumed he lied about the engine. But still, it was four years old in a time when a new Chevrolet was around $2000, so he could have saved up and bought it used. It's not as bad as the muscle cars owned by the kids in Dazzed and Confused, though. |

It's not as bad as the muscle cars owned by the kids in Dazzed and Confused, though. Got that right! Teenagers in Dazzed and Confused drive 70' LS6 chevelles! |
◊ 2012-08-12 06:03 |
No, what's wrong with the cars they drive in Dazed and Confused is the Duster. But what's wrong is teenagers own almost new cars during the Gas Crisis. -- Last edit: 2012-08-12 06:06:53 |

Buy the Impala, either a couple of years old or when the '59 models have been put on sale and the '58 cars have great price reductions. Even new for a few dollars down and monthly payments. It's not really all that customised, leave aside the 327 V8 (let's assume Toad was just trying to impress by saying it had a Corvette engine), it's had the badges removed (nosed and decked) the door handles removed (shaved) and that's it for body modifications - not even a custom grille. About a weekend's work, maybe even a morning's work for a custom shop. Six 3 year old Caddy tailights - cheaply available from parts places by mail order. Red stripes airbrushed around the original trim. White paint (not pearl) so easy to match up to the original paint. Back end jacked up. Four chrome reversed rims. The tuck'n'roll interior is the most expensive item and you could drive to Mexico and get it done in a day for $500 if you arrived at dawn and waited til midnight. A nice looking car but a mild custom that's easily affordable with a part time job and indulgent parents. |

I think the rear wheels and axle are modified as well. |
◊ 2012-11-05 17:06 |
As I said Rear axle was standard just longer air shocks, front end slightly lower. Was a popular look during the early 1960s, often known as 'a California rake'. |

If it was a Del Ray, The doors would be framed. |
◊ 2018-11-04 21:41 |
Definitely Impala. Pre-1959 Bel Air had 4 Taillights, Impala had 6 |
◊ 2018-11-04 21:45 |
Engine Swaps were Commonplace Back then, he couldve Dropped a 327 in it |
◊ 2021-08-07 09:12 |
Why is this not five-stars? If it was an 1957, it world be right? I not saying this, because I like this more the yellow 32 Ford or the black 55 Chevy, I even liked the Edsel more, because it's a sedan. this 1958 Chevy added more to the story more to the 32 Ford did. |
