This is listed as an LTD but I'm sure its a Galaxie, you can see the door posts. LTD's have frameless doors.

A 1971 Ford Galaxie 500 because of the front end, grill, and the roof.

Both LTD and Galaxie were available as 4-door sedan (pillared door windows) *and* 4-door hardtop (frameless windows). The LTD has a different grille. This one might be a Galaxie (500), but it could also be a Custom (500) which was the base model and used as police car.

If it's a real (former) police car, it's not an LTD. It would be a Custom 500 as Ross notes.

CHP did not use Fords in 1970

But it's a 1971, not a 1970.
It is said that all the police cars in this movie were real former police cars which Halicki bought cheap in 1972.
Considering that police cars were usually base models I think this one is a Custom (500, because of the chrome trim). But the picture and other scenes in the movie where this car appears give no clue to me if it's a Custom or a Galaxie, as they look nearly identical.

Unless you count the 1970 Mercury, the CHP didn't buy Fords from 1952 until 1984.

Its a galaxie 500 not a custom 500. custom 500's never had chrome window trim on the doors.

The only framed LTD's iv ever seen is the mexican made LTD and they had push bars on the bumpers and were equipped with stockpiled dashboards from the 69 fords.

I agree with Gator that its a Galaxie but it also appears to have '72 LTD headlight bezzels. when this movie was made it was made on a shoestring budget. most if not all of the vehicles used were "borrowed" from a friends car lot.

that's not completely unheard of though as parts for the 71 and 72 full size are interchangeable.
I myself have a 71 ford Galaxie 500 with 72 LTD headlight bezzels .

CHP bought at least one Ford Fairmont in 1979 and a Ford Mustang between 1979-1982... ;)
