Looks like 1926-27, but why does it have a crank? EDIT: Oh no, I've just realized something! No one said that electric starters were standard by 1919, it just said they were introduced then. -- Last edit: 2016-08-17 17:37:15 |

'course, a low-price car such as the Model T is the one car that wouldn't have had an electric starter as standard back then. My father told me that his first car, a 1952 Morris Minor, still came with a crank (if the electric started failed). |

When I was a peedie bairn, I used to help my dad wash the car every Sunday but I was too peedie to reach very high. So I did wheels, grilles, bumpers etc and those details are engraved on my memory for ever. Our Husky S2 had a hole in the bumper for inserting the starting handle - very much a reserve device for when nothing else succeeded so with legendary Rootes-jewel reliability it was never needed - see the hole in dead centre of Link to "www.simoncars.co.uk" . For S3 Husky the hole was blanked off - Link to "www.simoncars.co.uk" . Early Imps had similar at rear - obviously - which are similarly etched into my consciousness for ever - https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5d/Hillman.imp.arp.750pix.jpg . When I cleared out the garage after he died umpteen years later, I found 2 pristine starting handles carefully stashed away, still in their original oiled paper wrapping. |

Starting handles are very useful for setting valve clearances and for setting ignition timing after replacing contact breaker points. I cannot comment on 1950s Rootes reliability, my father only ever had one of their cars, a Chrysler 2 litre, and my first second third and fourth Hunters were 1972 to 1976. Cars of real quality do not have unsightly holes in the front bumper for the handle. A small chromed lift-up flap is provided under the central spotlight in some cases. /vehicle_827399-Bentley-R-Type-B17RS-1952.html /vehicle_165519-Morris-Six-MS-1953.html -- Last edit: 2016-08-17 19:36:33 |

That reminds me of a holiday rental a long time ago of a 2CV with knackered points - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjFuvlwGvq0 for the Plan B option. |
