Looks like a Leyland FG to me.

It could be, but it's been baffling me; could be based on a Commer BF or an Austin/Morris/BMC LD. Don't be misled by the doggie windows.

I was thinking BMC LD-ish too - the wheels are light/medium van.

I have a lead: http://www.whitbymorrison.com/_files/download_12/1.pdf but agree that it looks too small to be based on an FG in this case. Maybe something smaller with a similar body?

Your link has made me much readier to accept FG - I think the size and proportions are very close, particularly if you look at the wheelbase and lower body contents between the arches, and then the portions fore and aft. And the wheels match. Apart from the pug-nosed front with slight roof roll-over and some different lower side vents, the match is very good.

FG is correct I believe, I've seen a few pictures of these in the past.

FG K30 1½-Ton 9'6" standard wheelbase looks about right.

However looking again at the thumbnail the front matches the very early advert on the previous link http://www.whitbymorrison.com/_files/download_12/1.pdf so Morris-Commercial is most likely, before reverting to the more standard front.

OK chris40 congratulations  you had it right.

Comparing the wheelbase and rear wheel position with red ends to the 'torpedo sign' in the old advert it matches the Austin LD and the FG would to too long.

Like the old British Railways slogan, we get there in the end.

Luck or not you obviously must have considered it as a possibility. :D

So long as you didn't overshoot them: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walsall1955/4554993357/
I remember seeing this an hour or two after it happened.

The video doesn't seem recently made either:

Not just a "Conquest", but a "Rocket" type body, coachbuilt by S.C. Cummins Ltd. of Crewe. John Taylor aka. Mister Ripple bought it as a chassis cab in 1968, even though the first registration was allegedly made in 1971.
