La voiture est détruite à la fin du film, mais heureusement il ne s'agit pas d'une vrai Ferrari. Vu sa rareté, on a plutôt utilisé ici une MG modifiée. -- ◊ 2004-09-09 19:16	Je ne comprend pas l'allusion a la MG. La MG (TC ou TA) est la voiture en photo a coté. La replique utilisait il me semble une base de corvette mais c'est a verifier. Ce qui est sur c qu'ils n'ont pas utilisé une MG modifiée (RIRE). La California n'etait pas réservé au marché américain. Françoise Sagan a d'ailleurs possédée le modèle portant le n°de chassis 3021GT. On trouve 4 types différents de california. Deux types de chassis. Les longs de 2M60 dites LWB, et les courtes 2M40 dites SWB. Ensuite quelque soit la longueur du chassis, les phares pouvait etre carenés ou pas. Je ne peux pas dire si ici il s'agit d'une vraie California. Des replique on etait faite a partir de Ferrari comme la 330 ou la 250 gte beaucoup moins chere. -- Last edit: FlavienB

This version of Ferrari's already famous 250 series was designed specifically for the American market, featuring only two seats, a convertible top, and more horsepower than in its standard European trim. The 1961 Ferrari GT250 was a modified MG sports car. The producers received several angry letters from car enthusiasts who believed the car shown was a real Ferrari and that it was actually wrecked in the film. DIEHARD ◊ 2006-01-27 21:47	This kitcar however was severly wrecked, when they tried to draw back the speedometer, using a rollbench, thus preventing anybody finding out they had driven the car. However they forgot to lock it when it was on the turning wheels of the rollbench, so it was ejected out of the garage, through the window and down the hill.... CougarTim ◊ 2009-01-27 07:01	In the January 2009 issue of Automobile Magazine, there's a review of the new Ferrari California. In a brief sidebar, writer Don Sherman talks about this movie: "Decades ago ... I test-drove a faux Spider California manufactured by Modena Design & Development, located not in Italy but in El Cajon, California. This Ford V-8 powered kit car was a reasonably accurate visual copy, but one detail about it struck me as odd: the bottom surfaces of the four tailpipe extensions were deeply scratched and flattened. "I discovered what caused the damage upon viewing 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'.... Midway through the film, the car star soars through the air and lands in a shower of sparks.... The car I'd tested between filming and the movie's release was the actual flying machine." He also says that the "making of" material in the latest DVD edition (the "Bueller...Bueller...Edition") reveals that two Modena Design kit cars served as stunt doubles for the genuine Ferrari. Also: "Modena Design is no longer in business, and the movie car's whereabouts are unknown."
blk95ta ◊ 2009-07-18 01:01	I either saw one of the movie cars or one identical to it parked at a performance shop in phoenix, az in 2006. i said to someone there that the car reminded me of the one in ferris buellers day off and they said something to the effect that it was one of 4 used in the movie.
Mycroft ◊ 2009-10-07 08:38	About this being a modified MG... I read a magazine article published before the movie was released. It stated that parts of the car were taken from an MGB. I don't recal which exactly, but I think it was the trunk lid, and tail light lenses. The tail lights do appear to be MGB units. The article also said that the interior was a modern set up with electronic gauges, but that was being changed for a more authentic period look for the "up-coming teen fantasy movie".

wvb ◊ 2011-08-12 06:50	...a kit car yes, I think so. There was a company in the USA in the 1980s building 250GTO replicas out of Nissan 240Zs. I always thought the FB car although not a GTO replica was based on a 240Z. The cars look almost the same dimensionally but are of course poles apart. The 250 Spyder in FBs day off has British Jaeger/Smiths instruments (when Ferris notices the odometer) as found in most Jaguars of the 1960s instead of Veglia units so that sort of gave it away for me. As for the tail lamps, most original 250GT/GTB/GTCs etc were largely Pininfarina(if not Bertone or Scaglietti)designs who were also responsible for many 1950s & 1960s BMC cars that Farina did some styling jobs on hence real ferrari tail lamps look similar to MGB ones etc. The FB car i expect therefore uses MGB lamps and trunk lid.

proscriptus ◊ 2012-11-28 16:06	Don Sherman was correct: This was a Ford Flathead-powered Modena Spyder [sic]. It was not a kit car. Three were used: 1: The Hero car. Built by Mark Goyette and leased to Paramount for the filming. It’s the one that jumps over the camera, and is used in almost every shot. At the end of filming, Paramount returned it to Mark, with the exhaust crushed and cracks in the body. “There was quite a bit of superficial damage, but it held up amazingly well,” he said. He rebuilt it, and sold it to a young couple in California. The husband later ran it off the road, and Mark rebuilt the front end for him. That owner sold it in the mid-90s, and it turned up again around 2000, but hasn’t emerged since. 2: Sold to Paramount as a kit for them to assemble as their stunt car, they did such a poor job that it was basically unusable, aside from going backwards out the window of Cameron’s house. Rebuilt, it ended up at Planet Hollywood in Minneapolis, but dropped off the map along with Planet Hollywood Minneapolis. 3: Another kit, supposed to be built as a shell for the out the window scene, it was never completed at all, and disappeared after the film was completed. Mark thinks he once heard it was eventually completed and sold off, but it could also still be in a back lot at Paramount.
dsl ◊ 2012-11-29 01:50	So much MGB detail - as above tail lights and boot - plus door handles, the Smiths instruments, and possibly the door structure/shape, front wing line from screen to headlight, and interior door fixtures. And if you ignore the extended front, the overall size is fairly MGB-ish.
IMaDEM0N ◊ 2013-06-03 03:49	Yeah, my dad grew up with the guy who built it for them, in Hallandale, Florida. his name, David Crane (& yes, that's "Crane" of Crane Cams). The car is actually a modified MG with a Fiberglass body made special for the film. But the info they give in the movie about the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California IS accurate; "Less than 100 were made" that's true....less than 60 actually. It's similar to a 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 (Ferrari 275 GTB 4-Cam V12)

It went for $235,000. Three versions of the car were used in the famous scene where the expensive car is driven through a plate glass window and crashes into the ground. (A scene that had to be filmed nine times). None of them were real 1963 Ferrari California Spyders -- but rather replicas made by a company called Modena. And they still perform. The car's builder says that unlike other "movie cars," it's not built just for looks. The car puts out 500 horsepower and has been meticulously repaired and restored from its filmed fall (the front suspension took a beating).

To add to what Prosciptus said: Neil Glassmoyer and Mark Goyette of Modeno Designs built two "and a half" replicas, with rectangular steel tube frames by Bob Webb. Two running cars used interchangeably in almost all scene, chassis #0001 and #0003. One had a 1963 Ford 289 and a manual transmission, the other had a 1974 Ford 302 and a C4 auto because Matthew Broderick couldn't drive a manual. They were reportedly very unreliable, and the scene at the parking garage had to be filmed over a dozen times because they wouldn't start. #0001 is the car used in the jump, was repaired by Mark Goyette and sold to the couple, who sold it years later. Neil Glassmoyer acquired it, replaced and upgraded the entire suspension and swapped the engine for a Chevy 427 putting out over 500hp. He claims to have beaten a Dodge Viper in it. This was sold in January at Barrett-Jackson. #0003 was kept after filming by Neil Glassmoyer, who converted it to a manual. He sold at Mecum Auctions in 2013. It was sold again by Mecum in 2018 after a nine month restoration by Glassmoyer. One incomplete kit, #0002, supplied as a secondary stunt car, which was assembled so poorly by Paramount that it was virtually unusable for any driving scenes and only good for crashing off balcony. This was bought by Planet Hollywood Minneapolis. When that closed down, it was reportedly sold to Planet Hollywood Cancun and is currently there. A shell was supplied to crash off the balcony, was never completed. Status unknown.

Description from the listing: Prop "Ferrari 250 GT California" replica used in the crash scene of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. (Paramount, 1986). Replica "Ferrari" convertible used in the infamous crash scene in the film, forcing the nervous teen Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) to stand up to his domineering father. This "car" is a prop and not a functioning automobile. The film production used three "kit car" replicas of the Ferrari 250 GT California made by Modena Design & Development. This "crash car" was built and used solely for this memorable sequence as it hurled backwards through the glass of Cameron's father's garage falling to the ground below. Following production, the car was rebuilt as a display piece. It consists of a fiberglass body bolted to a rolling chassis with cosmetically finished interior with tan vinyl seats, tan carpeting, matte black fiberglass dashboard with instrumentation and wood-trimmed steering wheel replete with replica "prancing horse" logo at center. Tires are mounted on chrome wire wheels. There is no engine or drivetrain present. Being a prop, the hood has no hinges and rests in place. Both door latches are present but need adjustment. The trunk lid lacks a latch. The front right headlight lens is present, but is cracked and remains loose; the rear passenger side taillight lens is missing. Chrome trim and side mirror exhibit pitting and oxidation. The vinyl seats were reupholstered and the red paint was re-sprayed following production. Paint exhibits minor nicks with a 3" x 1" section of missing paint on the hood. Three D-rings are installed behind the seats with a steel support mount beneath the hood for the purpose of hanging for display. Presents very well. The Ferris Bueller "Ferrari" has developed a cult following since the film was released and remains one of the most recognizable cars in the world. The "hero" driving car used in the film sold at the 2020 Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction for $396,000. Measures 47" x 71" x 175". Sold without title on Bill of Sale. This item is located in the Eastern United States and special shipping arrangements will apply. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. Appears to be display car used in “Movietopia” experiences.
