Adrian ◊ 2006-03-17 16:55	Awesome use of this E38 750iL. Notice the wheels? No 750iL ever came with these wheels. These look like they are off a 740i Sport. But it's not possible if you think about it. The year this film came out (1997), there was no 740i Sport avail. - not until around `99-`01. Therefore the wheels must be after-market (although similar looking to the M-parallel wheels used on the 740i Sport). Bond (Pierce Bronsnan) has the ability to drive this car via remote control. The electric shock feature, if one touches the car is great. Wish I had that in my BMW. Overall, really cool gadgetry, stunts, jumps etc... Although the car wasn't used all that much - 5 min. max. G-MANN ◊ 2006-05-15 01:42	Since this film was shot in 1997 and had the support of BMW, I think it's fair to assume that the production was provided with brand new BMWs for the filming. I've read that about 17 BMWs were used and 15 of them were destroyed! So this ought to be listed as a 1997 750iL.

G-MANN ◊ 2006-09-01 15:03	There would have been some location filming in Hamburg, but this chase would have been filmed in a studio somewhere in England (the Bond films are usually made in Pinewood studios) and all these prop cars would have been brought in (left drive cars are used in Germany as opposed to RHD British cars) probably with fake numberplates. The BMW's numberplate seen here is actually a reference to the registration of Bond's Aston Martin from Goldeneye (BMT214A, the car used in Goldfinger was BMT216A) so it's most likely a fake (plus the fact that it would have to be put on over a dozen cars. The bit where the BMW drives off the roof of the car park and smashes into an Avis rental office on the street below was filmed at Brent Cross Shopping Centre in Hendon, London. You says the chases isn't long but then it is pretty intense one. I don't know if they used a different BMW for each gadget (this car featured rockets in the sunroof, a cable cutter that emerges from underneath the badge on the bonnet, the rear bumper opens up and drops tacks, the tires reinflate, the car sprays gas from underneath), but they would have needed a different car for each level of damage during the chase (the windscreen and rear window get smashed, the seats get shot up by gun fire, they converted some cars so that a stunt drive could sit in a recess carved in the interior where he drove the car from behind the front seat, sitting below the window level so the car would appear driverless, and then they'd need a car that Pierce Brosnan could drive normally in other scenes. Plus they would have damaged cars during filming so it's not too hard to see how they got through 17 motors during filming. When you see these spectacular car chases on film, you have bear in mind that no single real car could survive that amount of stress and still be working, I remember watching a documentary showing the filming of Die Another Day and they showed a behind scenes bit where they filmed the Aston Martin Vanquish smashing through the wall of the Ice Palace and sailing 50 feet through the air, when it landed you tell it got completely wrecked, when you see the chase on screen you are really watching dozens identical cars edited together. So you couldn't exactly do that kind of thing with a car in real life and still keep going. -- Last edit: 2006-09-01 15:08:51
Gag Halfrunt ◊ 2006-09-01 16:17	I think that the car park interior was filmed at Brent Cross. IIRC the production closed off the top floor of the car park for a week. The exterior shots of the car park, including spiral ramp and the BMW jumping from the roof and crashing into the Avis office, were filmed in Hamburg.

Exiv96 ◊ 2008-09-15 14:25	I remember one of these "Bond" BMW 750iL was also seen in an episode of a german "krimi" series. Probably Derrick or Der Alte. Same color, same wheels, same plate size. During the episode, it was buried under a pile of gravel.

Although I did consider using another capture that showed Bond behind the wheel, but I thought this one showed the side of the car better as well.

The shot where the tires were re-inflated was actually done by lifting the car up off its wheels and inflating them with air: special effects took care of the wheel motion.

IMHO, this is still better than this (see below) because it shows the whole car, the only thing the other one has is Bond standing beside the car, but it's not as good a picture of the actual car.

And another after the chase, when the car's in the shop, Bond's returns tells the rental car lady "I left the keys inside."

Apparently, they were 740i models, rebadged as 750iL models because that was the one they wanted to position as the flagship. So I think we have to pretend it's a 750iL, because that's what it says on the back, even though it's a 740i.
KA6AH ◊ 2015-08-15 21:25	They didn't use a real 750iL. It hasn't got fully chromed grille, mirror B pilars, double glazing, extended leather, etc. Plus, when Bond starts the engine you can clearly hear it's a V8 not a V12.

(I mean, of course not in movie, where it wasn't mentioned, but in some extras, "behind the scenes" etc.) I read now en.wiki article about the E38 and it says: Production started on July 23, 1993 on pilot production models and US specification variants on January 13, 1994, with series production commencing on February 17, 1994 and US-specification in the second half of the year. To this we can add the Ingo's comments on how BMW placed in movies/series their pre-serial/"0-series" vehicles. So maybe it was one of these US "pilots" from the early 1994? Gag Halfrunt ◊ 2017-01-25 15:38	My guess was/is that the studio had a product placement deal with the US branch of BMW, which insisted that the car shown be a US model and/or could only supply US models to the production. It's said that they used 17 different cars, and it seems unlikely that 17 identical 0-series cars from 1993 would still be lying around in 1996 or 1997.

I recall the letter that came with the tape saying something about it would be fun to see "your car" on the screen, and that the time to close your eyes was when the car reached the edge of the parking garage.
