Audi using Mercedes vans ???? WTF |

You know about many Audi-branded vans? (yes I know they could have used a VW LT) |

Audi would have used rather VW vans for their official support vehicles or at least something "neutral" can't imagine using products from their direct competition -- Last edit: 2024-01-06 13:53:16 |

"Direct competition", not really applying in this case, as MB did not compete in motorsports between 1955 and 1989. Also, the Düsseldorf plant (including its workforce) that made MB vans from 1962 (and still makes Sprinters) actually used to be an Auto Union (Audi) plant. But in reality they used VW vans indeed. Also note the MB T1 with Opel livery in the background right of the mainpic. |

not completely true Mercedes did compete in motorsports from 1986 onwards as the 1986 Sauber C8 Mercedes which continued all the way to 1991 , the final car being Sauber C291 Mercedes they also competed in Group A racing from 1986 in DTM with semi-works Mercedes team (Marko) and in ETCC with the french Snobeck team in 1988 DTM they already had a couple of full official works teams , most notably AMG -- Last edit: 2024-01-06 14:52:07 |

An odd Mercedes-Benz car a couple years every now and then, yes - I'm talking about an official Mercedes-Benz racing team. The C11 of 1990 was the first time since 1955 that Mercedes-Benz put their name on a car in a competitive event. |

Not true. Mercedes-Benz officially entered selected rally events from 1977 to 1980. First the London-Sydney and the 1978 Vuelta a la America del Sud, then the dustier events from the workd championship (Safari, Acropolis, Argentina, Ivory Coast). Cars used were the 280E, 450 SLC and 500 SLC. Here's one. /vehicle_757250-Mercedes-Benz-450-SLC-50-C107-1978.html A 500 SL was also prepared but apparently never used before Mercedes-Benz paused its rally activity. Early 1980s press said a Cosworth-tuned version of the future "Baby-Benz" (the 190E 2.3-16) was meant to enter the 1982 or 83 WRC, but that project was canned, probably because Group B regs allowed more than what Mercedes expected. |

Okay, but that's still on a relatively small scale, though. |

Still, they did officially enter competition after 1955. And I forgot to mention the rally/race exploits of the 300 SE in the early 1960s, also a works effort. |

They used also a correct LT, with a very bad fake German plate: /vehicle_1848738-Volkswagen-LT-Typ-28.html Possibly they didn't find a motorhome based on the LT? Or maybe not so far fetched that the team could really have used a Mercedes motorhome? ![]() For the Opel Rothmans team they also had a correct Bedford CF: /vehicle_1856661-Bedford-CF.html |

Well, regardless of whether one views 1977, 1985 or 1989 as the year that MB re-entered motorsports, you cannot deny that in 1983 (when this movie takes place), MB was far from an established player in motorsports compared to Audi. |
