carguy60 ◊ 2008-07-06 21:20	It's a Parklane Brougham. This car still exist and is owned by a friend of mine, who spent a small fortune restoring it after it's partial destruction on the show. Here are a few photos as it is today. This car, provided by Ford Motor Company, is equipped with nearly every option. Note the microphone on the dash.This is just a prop as no radio ever went with it. Under the hood is the original 428 V-8 engine. Does he also own the 74 Merc that McGarrett drove at the last? I know that car was up for sale about 10 years ago by Jack Lord's stunt double, who Lord gave the car to at the end of the show's run. Would LOVE to see this car...I want to drive it everyday if I owned it, but I probably wouldn't, because that'd wear it out! LOL. Anyway, yes it's a 1968 Mercury Park Lane Brougham. That year also had a few Park Lane two-door convertibles made, but the standard was the 4 door sedan. McGarrett's first car in the Pilot was a two door 67 Mercury Marquis, but he started driving this Park Lane Brougham with the first actual series episode, and drove it through at least season 6. With season 7 came the 1974 Mercury Marquis Brougham, which he finished out the series with.

The Park Lane of this year (1968) was not a two-door coupe only. Most Park Lanes for '68 were 4-door hardtops (like McGarrett's and the one pictured here). The Mercury Monterey had 2-door hardtops though--maybe you are thinking of them.

Anyway, I seriously doubt Mike would be interested in selling the car, as from what I understand he went through a lot of "blood-sweat-n-tears" (and I assume probably a lot of $$$ too ) to acquire the remains of the Parklane from an old CBS warehouse in Hawaii--then the process of completely restoring it. I would bet the man will keep the car until he dies...I would! I would be happy to just someday get to see the car...maybe sit in it or get a ride in it. -- Last edit: 2009-11-22 20:11:14

HunterMan ◊ 2009-11-30 07:59	Timothy acquired what was left of the car and began restoring it in 1986--almost 24 years ago, but I assume he does still have the Parklane. I don't know how old Timothy is and/or where he lives now. It appears that carguy60 might be your best bet to get a hold of him...but I wouldn't hold your breath on Mike selling it.

John Nordlum tapped the gas pedal and grinned. He loves this big, black car, now more than ever. Gently, he slipped the transmission into reverse, released the parking brake — the only working brake on the car — and backed out of his driveway. Nordlum's feet tap-danced again as he shifted into drive and then he was off. The car rumbled, and the bench seat rocked a bit. It's not bolted to the floor anymore. That didn't faze Nordlum, a lanky, graying stuntman with 30 years of experience in TV and movies. He's no stranger to rough rides, and his face lit up as he guided the boatlike monster. "It goes like hell," Nordlum said. That's for sure. The Mercury still has some go in it, and besides, it is no ordinary vehicle. This car has provenance. This was Steve McGarrett's trusted ride — the car Jack Lord drove when he played the square-jawed crime fighter during the heyday of "Hawaii Five-0." After the CBS series ended in 1980, Lord gave the car to Nordlum, who had been his stunt double and the man often at the wheel of the Mercury whenever it chased the bad guys through Honolulu. Ever since, Nordlum has wondered why his friend did that, but found his answer last month — when CBS borrowed the car for its remake of "Hawaii Five-0." "Jack's spirit is in that car, and he is going to live again in this show through that car," Nordlum said. "That's why he gave me that car." The Mercury Marquis was the second car used in the original "Hawaii Five-0," which premiered in 1968. McGarrett drove a 1968 Mercury Parklane Brougham through the 1973 season, then got the keys to the Marquis. TORN SEATS, RUST Nordlum was a diver when Lord saw him during filming at the Makai Pier in 1971. The actor offered Nordlum a part in an episode and eventually that led to a full-time job as a stunt double and stand-in for Lord. After "Hawaii Five-0" ended, Nordlum grew a mustache and worked as Tom Selleck's stunt double and stand-in on "Magnum, P.I." He made stunt work a career and founded the Hawaii Stunt Association on Lord's suggestion. For years, Nordlum drove the Marquis everywhere he had to go. Sometimes, fans recognized the car and Nordlum let them pose for photographs. And despite reports to the contrary, he never wanted to sell it. The " 'Five-0' car," as his neighbors refer to it, is a landmark on Nordlum's street. He's maintained the engine himself, kept the big, 460-cubic-inch V8 running — and running loud — but has not kept the rest of the car in vintage condition. The headliner is tattered and the seats are torn in so many places that the springs are visible. Flakes of rust litter the floor. Still, the police radio mike and cord that marked it as McGarrett's ride are there. Early last month, friends who belong to the Teamsters, one of the unions that work in the film industry, asked if CBS could use the car for the remake. Nordlum secured the deal on the strength of a handshake in his driveway. "They put it on a trailer in front of my house and when they drove down the road, it was like they took my baby," he said. "They drove it down the street and I cried." Nordlum worried the whole time it was gone, he says. When it was returned a month later, it had a shiny new paint job, but its rectangular hood ornament and radio antenna were missing. Still, it had a part in the "Hawaii Five-0" remake. "It's one of the stars of the show," Nordlum said. "It's going to be McGarrett junior's baby." MCGARRETT'S SON This is no cameo for the Mercury. The car appears at the beginning and the end of the pilot, Nordlum said. The new version of "Five-0" follows the creation of an elite police unit, led by a younger McGarrett, son of the original top cop, so it would hardly be possible to refer to the car's role in the previous series without some kind of funky flashback. Instead, the car has a place in the current story. When McGarrett, a former Navy SEAL, returns to Hawai'i at the beginning of the pilot, he finds the car in storage. It had belonged to his late father and needs fixing up. The car is seen again at the end of the pilot, and McGarrett is tackling the project. In the new "Five-0," the detective calls the project "the restoration of a lifetime." That hits home for Nordlum, who has been in that car and felt he wasn't quite alone. "We see that he works on the car, and it is part of his hobby, his meditation, and he communicates with his father through the car," Nordlum said. "I felt very good when I heard about that scene. "When I am working on the car, I swear I can remember Jack Lord in this car," he said. "I think he communicates with me through this car." The car is ready for its comeback , Nordlum says. It will always be running, a rumbling tribute to Lord. "His spirit is in this car," he says. "That thing doesn't quit. Nearly 200,000 miles and there is no stopping that car. It's like McGarrett. It goes on and on like the character."

Five0Fiend ◊ 2010-11-07 05:14	I wanted to add that if you watch the opening scenes/credits of the show, the 1967 Mercury 2 door hardtop is the car speeding along, you see the car from an aerial shot, freeze frame and you see it, interesting considering the car was not used in the series. However, there is at least one episode that being season 4, there is a stock footage scene where Jack Lord walks out of his office building and enters the 1967 2 door hardtop and drives off, he eventually arrives at a location and he is driving his 68 Mercury 4 door hardtop, of note, he is wearing a different suit when he arrives than when he left the office. There is also another episode where a Lincoln Continental 4 door comes into scene with Jack Lord driving, he parks and the Lincoln suddenly turns into a 68 Mercury Park Lane. There are lots of scenes like this, cars changing in the same scene.

The 74 is basically rusted away and as Michael Timothy stated his is basically a shadow of the original as almost everything has been replaced. Do like I did and recreate one yourself. Mine is a dead ringer for the original car with exception that mine has power vent windows also. I will tell you it ain't easy to find one. I found several sedans but no hardtops. Then when I did find a hardtop it was not a Brougham. When I did find one it was a parts car at best. I got lucky and found a Brougham hardtop that had been in Arizona since new but interior was sunbaked and shreaded. The body was rock solid with almost no rust. It was amazing. The guy that had the car had a sedan parts car from Mn. that was a total rust bucket but had a beautiful almost perfect interior. I was able to use the dual power front seats and rear seat which did not have a tear in them. Pretty neat that they are the original seats as they have the embroidery above the center armrest. The door panels are different vs. the hardtop and sedan but mine were in great shape. I had to do some altering to the rear seat brackets as they are different. So I now have a nice triple black Brougham hardtop with dual power seats, power windows, power vent windows, and a few more options. They are hard to find but thats what I would do and save a bunch of money and have fun with it.

This is definately a fun and smart alternative to the orignal two cars. I remain, however, determined to at least try to be the next keeper of one of the two original cars if there is even the slightest change. Always good to have something to aspire to. Enjoy your special car.

First, McGarrett's last car was not a 1973...but a 1974 Mercury Marquis. The 68 really did not "survive" as we think of the term, LOL! There was hardly anything left when Michael Timothy acquired the remains...he basically rebuilt and/or re-created a brand new car. But, it's still awesome that he took what was left and re-created McGarrett's iconic Park Lane! I also read the article this last fall about the 74 Merc being used for a part of the new show...and I was especially pleased that Nordlum still owned it! 1968 brougham ◊ 2011-04-18 05:19	Here are the pictures of my 68 Brougham. It still needs a few minor things but nothing major. The car was in Scottsdale Arizona most of its life. It still retains the original exhaust system. I will try to post more pics this summer as I just pulled it out of the garage (first time since last fall). It has power vent windows which the 5-0 car did not. Its not a perfect car but perfect for what I need. Thanks again for wanting to see some pictures.

Found many Park Lane sedans (many were not Broughams). Its really hard to find a hardtop that is a Brougham thats not a rust bucket. My car was in Scottsdale Az for the first 35 years of its life then stored. Let me know and if not thats fine too as I know I will hate to part with it.

It is still sporting the Illinois licence plate 'BOOK EM' on this example.
