2588 NE was Manchester, early 62, so S2a likely which fits thick sills. But no idea what it was underneath the repaint - a special body of some sort with macho bits on the front bumper, big custom single pane windscreen (instead of small 60s split screen) but narrow rear axle looks a bit noddy for serious use. Would expect bigger display above screen if ex-ambulance/police/mountain rescue or whatever.

I think it may be S2 as indicators may be add ons.

Strange body , seen a few mobile labs like this but all had single doors at rear.
Maybe an ambulance but lack of side windows strange.

On front is a capstan winch ( a sought after extra now ) used for forestry , self recovery and dropping Coastguards over cliffs.
An odd fitment for an ambulance or a lab but maybe a later addition.

Looking at all the thumbs it may just have been built as a goods van .

Vehicle has translucent roof hence lack of side windows, front doors can be pushed flat against side wings like RAF Land Rover fire vehicles -would confirm it has a ex emergency vehicle .

rattle on wrote .. ex emergency vehicle .

Interesting idea. But a 62 plate on a 62-ish is probably the original number, so not a re-reg/sold off ex-military emergency vehicle, but from a civilian organisation of some sort. Manchester doesn't have many mountains, lifeboats or coalmines, so those rescue services can probably be excluded.

Perhaps the coachbuilder was based in Manchester.

Maybe some sort of on-site emergency vehicle - eg airport, docks on Manchester Ship Canal, power station, big factory ....

……Eccles cake emergency fly supplies, Sunday tripe deliveries, Boddington’s cash-in-transit..

Perhaps the Manchester ship canal connection as dsl?

Could be a Manchester Port or Salford Docks vehicle.

Land Rover emergency vehicles would be expected to have over 15 years of service use but by the end of the 1970s the docks were closing down and apparently the cranes were painted in a similar blue?

There was quite a big coal mine on the edge of Manchester until the 1960s, not far from where Manchester City's stadium is now.

Also not too far from the Peak District which has mountain & cave rescue services.
