Ford's not so succesful attempt to sell a Mazda Bongo in disguise in Germany: The Econovan. The only place where I could see them back then was the local Ford dealer. |

I had or have one as a toy in Bror Brodersen livery (a chain of toy stores in Denmark, Sweden and Finland) -- Last edit: 2019-05-12 14:02:18 |

why would anyone buy this instead of Transit ? |

Because it was smaller, plus it was Japanese to boot which meant it would be around until the end of time. |

Nooooo, they weren't bought! Just offered. I can still see the in the salesman's eyes when 10 year old me walked into the Ford showroom and asked for a sales brochure. It was the first time he had been asked about that van and he wasn't expecting a kid - of all people - to know about it. |

Rebadging alien stuff like this is/was a common strategy, particularly for commercials, and it does't really matter if they sell diddley squat from showrooms. The target is much more fleet buyers looking to replace a full selection of vehicles across sizes in one go with one deal covering finance, servicing and so on, whether buying or leasing. So this rebadged Econovan plugs a gap below Transits and Joe Bloggs Couriers (or whoever) can bulk buy a complete replacement of their fleet - let's say 2 of these, 8 Transits, 4 Cargos - all delivered with same accessory spec, paint and livery and so on. In effect having a few of these lurking around means they sell more Transits because it stops Joe Bloggs Couriers from going to Renault for the fleet renewal. |
