Isn't this car kind of classic today? So why did they crash it?

It seems like they repainted it for the show, so I guess it was actually one of those countless rustbuckets.

There are still many on the road, I believe. And anyway they crash anything in this series.

Lots of R4s have rust problems at the fixation point of the rear torsion bars :/

That's right, I even saw an episode where they crashed a Pontiac Bonneville which is quite rare here in Germany and Austria. :/ By the way, the new episodes start on the next thursday on RTL.

Yeah, there's still many, many Renault 4s around nowadays. In Algeria and Morocco you'll still commonly see upwards of 30 in one day, and that's not an exaggeration. In the one day I've spent in the south west of France I counted 13 of them. I drove from El Formigal in the Spanish Pyrenees to Andorra, going through the tacky religous hellhole of Lourdes. That area of France was still full of them, and there were plenty of Renault 5s and Fiat Pandas still doing the rounds.

Despite that, right hand drive Renault 4s are VERY rare in the UK nowadays. In fact I can't even remember seeing one here this century. I don't know how many Renault 4s are left in Germany, but I don't imagine they're very unusual.

I saw plenty of Fiat 500s in Rome last year.

Compared with the hundreds of thousands of R4, sold in Germany, you can say, that all are gone. Ah, I just have found the actual datas:
http://renault-4.blogspot.com/2008/07/r4-bestand-in-deutschland.html
900 000 R 4 sold in Germany, in June 2008 registrated still 3248, which makes around 0,36 %.

Gone by the usual problem: rust, rust and again rust. No kidding, old-style-TÜV-contoller (the two-yearly-technical test for cars in Germany) have told me "A R4 belonged to the worst rust-buckets, we had in the last decades. Because we know that, we alwas have controlled a R4 sharper for rust than other cars. Mainly we could find something at every R4."

I was indeed really astonished, when some weeks ago I saw a red R4 on my way to work, still in use as an all-day-car. I really had thought "Oh, a R4. How many years I haven't seen one, except on oldtimer-meetings?"

Except one in very good shape with old-timer plate often parked in a street near here, I do not see many R4 here in Belgium either. Probably due to rust, though that this must have killed more R5 than R4 :D (I saw a 1st-gen R5 recently, that long time ago the previous time that I saw one in Brussels...)

I even haven't seen a 2nd gen. R5 ("Der kleine Freund" in German commercials : "The little friend") for a long time.

Oh, yes, one I've noticed on Rapid recently, used by a plumber's company. It's (old-DIN-style) plate was appreciable: DO-Z 8. A real annoyance for a BMW-freak. Anyways, such short combination isn't possible without serious reasons any more in Dortmund since 1997.

@Antoine a really old one, with grey bumpers and the R4-gearshift?

P.S. I've the impression, that in the 80ies in America "Le Car" has caused nearly as many jokes or lusterings as later on the Yugo or the Geo Metro.

That's interesting. I'm surprised there was as many as that sold in Germany. However, could it be possible that some of those were exported? I know Germany exports lots of used cars, and the former French colonies of Africa still love the Renault 4. I guess the drier climates there save them from the worst of the rust.

Yes, nowadays in Germany the export of used cars is extremely (statistically around 80% of all cars running here), but the most R4's were indeeed crushed at junkyards.

When the R4 was getting old (resp. too rusty for the TÜV, so compared with other cars quite soon), it was in the 70ies and 80ies. There the export of used cars was much weaker than today. The borders to Eastern Europe were still closed, the export to West European countries was much more difficult and expensive - pre-"Schengen"-time! - and to countries outside of Europe it was more lucrative for the export-dealers to make business with trucks, buses and bigger, more valuable cars. The export of Mercedes and big BMW's was big even in the 80ies, Audi came later, also mid- and premium-sized Japanese cars. And bigger Peugeots were interesting, too, 404, 504, 505 and 604. With the smaller ones you couldn't make so many money, so Visa's and LN's were crushed very fast, similar like the R4 and R5 (R6 anyways).

Even today it's a fact, that on German junkyards you can see overproportional (compared to the absolute selling-numbers) many smaller cars, mainly two-door, also overproportinonal many Ford's, Renault's and Fiat's. All cars, where value and reputation were too low to be attractive for the export.

Some years ago, a friend has talked with an old guy from Senegal, who started the car-export-business to Africa quite early, around 1970. His favourite cars had been at first all kind of Mercedes (for sure), Borgward Isabella, also Peugeot 404 and Opel Kapitän. Later he took also the VW 411 and -interesting for me ;) - the K 70.

P.S. Wasn't the R4 also assembled somewhere in Northern Africa?

The R5? It was a real R5, i.e. not the Supercinq (which is quite less rare but still not so common anymore either here), but not sure if it was a very early one.

From the "20 Jahre Alarm für Cobra 11" special:

During a montage of clips, we see this one of Semir running away from an exploding R4. I don't remember seeing that in an actual episode.
