More than 10 years ago I sold a very similar Continental (with additional Conti-Kit), which was built in 1978. Could it be this one is a 1978 as well?

Absence of opera windows would appear to make this one a Collector Series 1979.

Actually opera windows were an option on the base Continental Sedan. They came included in some packages and were not available with others. So this car could be a '78 or '79 and it's not a collectors series, as the CS was available only in dark blue, white, silver, and light blue.

Yes. I was wrong in my earlier post and now believe this is a Continental of '78 or '79 with the full (no opera windows) vinyl roof option.
The "Collector Series" (yes, available only in '79) had that name on the sail panel and also had a gold-toned grille, both lacking on the photo'ed car.

Here is a link to a page from the 1978 Lincoln brochure showing the full vinyl roof with no opera windows.

The example in all the shots but the last is a '78, not a '79.

Curiously, that last shot brings into question whether two cars were used. It so happens that the single spotting feature between the '78 and '79s is the door strike molding on the rear quarter panel (length of the molding was visibly decreased in '79), and it's been changed out - quite noticeably - with a white molding). The feature photo of this car shows the correct black molding.

Either it was replaced mid-shoot, or two different cars were used. Pinstriping color doesn't appear to match up either.

Cudak, I've closely examined '78 and '79 Lincoln brochures and I cannot see any visual difference in the moulding of which you speak. Am I misreading you? If not, do you have an illustration showing the difference?
(For YEARS I have always believed the '78 and '79 non-collector series Lincolns were identical on the exterior.)

Commander, ask and ye shall receive. '75-78 at top, '79 at bottom:

Applies to all variants, whether base Continental 4 or 2 door, Town Car, or Town Coupé. If you find a '79 with the former trim, it will be either a very early example, or a case of swapped trim.

Don't go by the catalogs - early, pre-production vehicles do not serve as representative examples.

Many thanks, Cudak!
You learn something new every day.

I guess during my field observation days of may years ago I just never noticed that subtle difference.
Especially since the '79 brochures showed the '78 trim.

Hmm... I guess Lincoln is pitching penny on these shorter trim on 1979 model years.

Does seem a very obscure and odd way of altering a car for the new model year. Something the public likely wouldn't even notice.

And the '79 model placed the molding just above a character line. At least in this example.

The feature line is stamped into the sheet metal of the '78 as well.
