The 1980 Audi first was used in Episode 1.03. Magnum used it for most of the episode:

Used again in Ep 1.04, where it blows up (you only see the explosion, not the car exploding):

Ep 1.16:

Ep 2.08, Mad Buck Gibson steals the Ferrari, and Magnum chases in the Audi:

Twice in this episode, they show the old Audi outside the King Kamehameha club:

Is this the same one used in E.T.?

I doubt it. Magnum was filmed in Hawaii.

That was my first thought too, but one of the comments on the E.T. one says that it was used in multiple productions around the same time. Given how many fewer cars there are in Hawaii than on the mainland (even more so back then), it might have made more sense to ship the cars over from LA for the duration of filming. The Ferraris certainly didn't come from Hawaii.

The Audi was used in Magnum in 1980. They continued to use it until the new model came out in 1983. ET started filming in late 1981. I very much doubt that they would ship the car back to California from Hawaii, then ship it back again. Especially when there were plenty of new Audis in California to use.

That's actually a good point, I hadn't thought of that. I just suspected it since someone commented on the page of the E.T. 5000S saying that they know the car's current whereabouts and that it was used in multiple productions.

Update: That commenter's claims were proven to be false once I saw pictures of the car. See the E.T. car's page for more details.

Just confirming this was a 1980 model (so it wasn't the one used in E.T, which was a 1981–82).

1980 was the first year of the rectangular headlights and the last year that Dolomite Gray Metallic was available. I studied hundreds of photos of Dolomite Gray Metallic versus Meteor Gray Metallic (a 1981–83 color), and determined that this was the former (Dolomite was darker than Meteor).
