Junkman ◊ 2006-01-29 23:44	This is a 59 Plymouth to begin with. The Fury, albeit available as a four door sedan that year, had different side trim, as had the Belvedere. Plaza was deleted for 59, so the lowest level model was the Savoy, and that is what you are looking at.

Junkman ◊ 2006-01-29 23:59	Common confusion. In the movie, the Taxis start out as 57 Plymouths and somewhere along the chase scene mysteriously transform into 59s. It is rumored that the 57s didn't survive the first few stunts (up to 8 people aboard and jumps) and were thus replaced by 59s, because in 63 when the movie was made, 57 Plymouths were already quite hard to come by.

Junkman ◊ 2006-01-30 08:24	Weren't that two 57 Plymouths in the first taxi chase scene that ultimately leads up to the park with the big W? I haven't seen the movie in a while, but the switch from 57 Plymouths to 59 Plymouths for the next scene when the last party arrives at the park has always puzzled me. wrenchhead ◊ 2006-01-30 21:02	The pic is when they are first arriving at the park - only two people in the cab. There may have been a 57 earlier but I didn't see it. Not surprising since my eyes were crossed from watching so much to get a decent capture of the various cars. I think, I'm through with it for a while.

Rondo ◊ 2011-02-19 09:36	Well, I was pretty sure, but I just watched all the segments with the taxis to confirm. The Leo Gorcey (#261), Eddie Anderson (#251), and Peter Falk (#253) cabs are all 1959s all the way through, even all the chase scene shots. -- Last edit: 2011-02-20 08:21:15
Skid ◊ 2011-02-19 10:25	During a scene where one of the back doors is open, one of the cars is revealed to have been turquoise at one time, judging by the paint on the inner doors. Rondo ◊ 2011-02-20 08:20	I agree with Skid. At one time or another we can see the original colors of both cars in the door jams, and that may explain why they're Belvederes instead of Savoys. I know there were more than two of the 451 & 453. Maybe there were multiples for dialogue scenes and car chases. -- Last edit: 2011-02-20 08:24:20
Cycolac Fan ◊ 2012-02-09 14:46	I was 90% sure whenever I saw a badge on the tailfins on any of these cars it read 'Savoy' and not Belvedere. However if Modell's photo shows Belvedere then so be it (I can't get it large enough in my screen to tell) And yes, they were always 1959 models, never 1957 or 58. The Crumps get taken to the hardware store in a '59 and every other taxi used at the airport to and from the park and in the final chase is a '59. Regarding colour, were taxis always painted final colour on the production line? Or could they have been repainted when they were delivered and fitted with meters and signs etc? When they climb into Plymouth no.451 it has blue door jams, blue dashboard (as can be seen above) and a red interior - an odd colour mix. -- Last edit: 2012-02-09 14:58:38
modell ◊ 2012-03-19 03:03	^^ It's possible that they used a combination of Belvederes and Savoys; maybe Plazas too. In the late '50s, most, (if not all) US car manufacturers followed the same general design for a particular model year, with only minor differences by trim levels. The production crew likely acquired a bunch of normal used cars that they could frequently crash and repair. I doubt they went through the trouble to get authentic taxi cabs. Just check out the huge dent in the main pic with the decorative trim piece slapped over it, lol.
Rondo ◊ 2012-10-28 21:39	You can see the damage to the right rear and front fenders that the car received in scenes that were later than this shot in the movie (particularly the marina scene where it is hit by the 453 taxi), showing that the scenes were filmed out of sequence. This damage to the 451 taxi is present in most of the chase scenes, showing that most of them involved the same car. It seems to be absent in the final alley scene. Of the two cars, 453 receives by far the most damage and was probably represented by more than one car. The interior and door frame colors are largely consistent, except in the airport scene when Ding and Benjy first get in. There, the interior and door frames seem to have the same colors as 453.
