It's a combination hearse/limousine body on the 1939 La Salle commercial chassis. Movie buff and Cadillac aficionado, Bob Evans, of Tampa, FL, writes: The 1940 [actually 1939] LaSalle hearse in "Dr No" turns into a British hearse [but what model?] when it goes over the cliff. I rented the video to verify it. You have to play the video in slow motion to catch it. Here's another hearse type (same year, same chassis) but with the popular carved "Cathedral" sides: www.car-nection.com/yann/Dbas_prf/39lshrsb.jpg -- Last edit: 2006-01-17 00:20:25 |

The one used in the chase scene is, as mentioned correctly, a 1939 La Salle Combination by A.J. Miller. The "English" hearse going over the cliff (it is very obvious that it is a different car) is based on an early 50s Humber, but the coachbuilder is debated for ages within the professional car community. My belief is that it isn't that English after all, rather one by Duffy's of Dundalk, Ireland, or even locally converted. But this is still unconfirmed speculation (Duffy's Coachbuilders still exist and were contacted on the subject, but unfortunately don't hold records that far back). The one MrCadillac refers to in the link is an Art Carved Panel Hearse by S&S, now owned by Lyndahl Funeral Home, Green Bay, Wisconsin. I doubt it was a funeral car going down the tubes here. To me it looks like a repainted ambulance. |

Those poor whitewall tires (I can almost feel their pain trying desperately to retain grip) ... |

Robi, since they switched this to a Humber for the shot where it goes off the road, how about getting a capture so that can be listed? |

At least they had the good sense to not destroy the LaSalle. Even in 1962, that must've been a valuable car! |

I wonder if the actual LaSalle used in the movie is still around to this day. |

That LaSalle would have been the good three-speed manual Cadillac trans that hot rodders favoured? |
