dsl ◊ 2013-06-09 02:58	Feature-length pilot for The Sweeney series which appeared as Series 1 Episode 2 of the Armchair Cinema series; in Sweeney terms, it's a separate DVD and completed a year earlier. Has pretty well all the ingredients of the series (author, main characters and their back stories, actors, same office sets, lots of Fords - though not Essex plates so presumably no supply arrangement with Ford at that stage, strong plot, plus the humour) apart from the theme music. Feels like an extended episode instead of the more crash-bang-wallop approach of later series and especially the films - no Jags or any other car died in the name of screen glory and no dramatic chases. The other difference is that Regan's personally owned car is a newish blue Granada - in the series, he's given fairly ancient Cortina Mk2s or Escort Mk1s. The debut appearance of the phrase "Get yer trousers on - you're nicked", 2 large whiskies in a pub cost £0.76, and Regan pays £700 a year for his mortgage on a suburban 1930s bungalow.
