![]() ![]() ![]() 1974 made-for-TV historical drama about the execution of Private Eddie Slovik for desertion, the first American soldier to face the death penalty for desertion since the American Civil War. Whereas every other soldier convicted of desertion was dishonorably discharged, Eddie's criminal record led to his desertion being considered a deliberate attempt to avoid military duty. `He had also stated that he would allow himself to be captured to avoid fighting so the U.S. Army opted to make an example out of him. To this day, Eddie is both seen as a complete coward and a victim of circumstance. I think he should have just gotten a few years in jail instead since he initially was declared unfit for service due to his record before desperation led to them drafting him. Martin Sheen stars as Eddie Slovik. A 9-year-old Charlie Sheen has a cameo as a child swiping pastries at Eddie's wedding! This is also Sheen's first feature film credit, though he had previously appeared uncredited as an extra in Badlands. ![]() ![]() ![]() Set in January 1945. Airdate: March 13th, 1974 |
