I love the gigantic Chrysler 300 sedans they used for Marcus Welby, M.D. Awesome-looking large car. (Welby, in the 2-hour pilot however, drove a 1968 Imperial). Robert Young's character was given a new Chrysler for each year of the show to make his house calls with, and all were light blue sedans with a clean top-vinyl top delete (James Brolin still puttered along in the same motorcycle though) In the later years of the show, Universal used the cheaper Chryslers (of the '73 vintage, Newport or New Yorker, sans the gorgeous covered headlamps and complete with ugly federal bumpers); my personal favorite used on the show (and probably my favorite of any TV show, aside from George Barris' Batmobile) was the '69 300 (used in the first season, '69-'70)- I would love to own one someday, with the covered headlamps, wraparound bumpers, Chrysler's corporate fuselage body style for the 1969 model year, the hulking rear quarter wheel skirts (incorporated into the body), and the tall, narrow "THREE HUNDRED" letters on the rear quarters. Does anyone else out there like this car? PS: I was born in '77 and saw this show in reruns, and still appreciate this car! |

There are few large cars of this era I don't like. But if it was me, I would take the '68 Imperial! |

Chrysler Corp had a very active Hollywoord PR dept in the early 70s. Mannix, Brady Bunch, Medical Center and probably dozens more all used Chryslers. Not only did Welby drive a 300, but so did David Hartman's doctor character in The Bold Ones, as well as Debbie Reynolds in The Debbie Reynolds Show. The reason why Welby went to cheaper Newports is they quit making 300s after 1971. I too saw the cars on TV and fell in love with them. The 69 has a vertical bar in the center of the grille, the 70 did not and the 71 had an inner wrap around piece in the grille. All had hidden headlights. |

Here's a Dodge L-600 from episode #4.3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2DImrnw60E BTW, geting.se didn't work so well. Perhaps I should've given it another name. Let's try this again: Okay, it worked this time, but the image sucks since I got it off of YouTube. -- Last edit: 2011-02-02 23:50:42 |
