This film was about Operation Thunderbolt, a counter-terrorist hostage rescue carried out by the Israelis Defense Force Commandos Unit, the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit (known as Unit 269 and the Sayeret Matkal) at the Entebbe International Airport in Entebbe, Uganda from the night of the 3rd to the early hours of the 4th July 1976. The operation resulted in the rescue of 102 of the 106 hostages and the deaths of 4 hostages: Jean-Jacques Maimoni - 19-year-old immigrant from France, shot in mistake by Israeli company commander, Muki Betzer and another commando soldier. Pasco Cohen - 52 years old, also shot in mistake by Israeli commandos. Ida Borochovitch - 56-year-old immigrant from Russia, shot by a hijacker in the crossfire between the hijackers and the Israeli commandos. Dora Bloch - 74-year-old British-Israeli grandmother, was taken to Mulago Hospital in Kampala before the raid, dragged from her hospital bed and shot by members of the Ugandan Army under orders of Idi Admin and dumped at a plantation field, 20 miles (32km) east of Kampala. Among the dead was the commander of the Sayeret Matkal, Yonatan Netanyahu (known as Yoni) who was shot by a Ugandan sniper stationed in airport tower. After the operation, Idi Admin ordered the executions of 245 Kenyans living Uganda in retaliation for Kenya's assistance in the operation as they allowed the Israeli planes to refuel before travelling back to Israel. On the 24th May 1978, Kenyan Agriculture Minister, Bruce MacKenzie was killed when a bomb attached to his plane exploded after leaving a meeting with Idi Admin, it was suspected that Admin had ordered MacKenzie's murder in retaliation for his involvement prior to the raid. Two years later, on the 31st December 1980, a bomb was detonated at the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi, killing 20 people and injuring another 87. It was suspected that bomber was a Moroccan PFLP member named Qaddura Mohammed Abd Al-Hamid who flew to Nairobi on a Maltese passport, after the bombing, Al-Hamid fled to Saudi Arabia. -- Last edit: 2022-09-03 16:47:23 |
