Some historic background: Strafbataillon 999 (named Strafdivision 999 in real life) was a division of the German Wehrmacht during the war which consisted mainly of prisoners who had the opportunity to rehabilite themselves in the military. These units were watched by the Feldgendarmerie, the Nazi Military Police (called "Kettenhunde" (chain dogs) by regular soldiers), and had many nearly suicidal missions, because most soldiers serving in Strafdivision 999 had no "citizen rights" like others. Although they fought on the Eastern Front like in this movie, they were soon withdrawn from that war theatre, because many of the criminals, originally jailed because of their political views, defected to the Soviet army. |
