the Waffen SS was considered an Army inside the Army, they always got the best available equippment and the most loyal (fanatic) men , at begining they were discredited by the regular army as party bullies (thugs) but that changed very quickly and they got their fearsome reputation to this day some historians describe them as "the best fighting men serving the worst possible cause" -- Last edit: 2012-09-10 20:18:44 |

Sorry for nitpicking, but there was always a distance between the Wehrmacht and the SS, also the Waffen-SS. The old Wehrmacht-soldiers had always their conceit agains the SS-men. Because they were "real" soldiers and the SS only the party's army. To the SS went the guys, who had been too stupid to be accepted by the Wehrmacht. The SA had the worst reputation, as all stupid, uneducated morons, coming from the lowest social classes. Annother reason for the distance was, that SS-guys were all Nazis, but the most Wehrmacht-soldiers, especially the officers, were nationalistic, reactionary and right-wing, but not really Nazi-supporters. In pre-war-times it was not easy to join the Wehrmacht. They have sorted out the applicants. The highest standards had been in the pre-Nazi-times, when it was still the Reichswehr. It was the "100.000 Mann-Heer", as regulated in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Versailles (o.k., in fact there were more than 100.000 men, a hidden armament, but the requirements were high anyways). One of my grandfathers had been a Reichswehr-soldier since 1930 or 1931, and he was always proud of that. Also for one real important reason: until 1933 the soldiers took oath on the Deutsches Reich, afterwards to Adolf Hitler. Even in thefirst years of WWII, the German soldiers kept their internal levels and reputations and had always checked by theirselves "Is he pre- or post 1933?" It was already in the war, in 1941 or 1942, when my grandfather said to my grandmother "Do you know what? Since today wee aren't allowed to use the military salute any more ( Link to "de.wikipedia.org" ). Only the Hitlergruß is allowed now" |

yes Ingo , as always you are more detailed than me and AFAIK for their high loyalty the Waffen SS got always the best stuff, if I remember most if not all the Tiger , Panther etc tanks went to Waffen SS units while the Wehrmacht had to use old Panzer 3 and 4 and pre war French tanks -- Last edit: 2012-09-10 21:40:21 |
