This film was about the personnel of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Program, a program set up by the Government and Civilian Section of the Allied Armies to protect art from war areas and retrieve artwork previously stolen by the Nazis during World War II. The personnel of the MFAA were mainly made up of a mixed of military and civilians who were mainly art scholars, museum directors and art historians. During the war, the personnel of the MFAA had not only found themselves racing to recover before the Nazis destroyed them under Hitler's Nero Decree, but had to recover the artwork before the Russians had a chance to seize the artwork as their Red Army "Trophy Brigades" Units begun to seize any recovered artwork as war reparations to take back to the Soviet Union. The characters in the film were based on the real personnel of the MFAA and other figures: Frank Stokes (portrayed by George Clooney) - Based on George Stout, Former art conservator, lecturer, head of The Harvard University Fogg Museum and US Navy Reservist, was assigned to the US Army 12th Group and was the first to be recruited into MFAAP and later supervised the inventory recovery of artworks previously hidden in salt mines, churches and other locations throughout Europe, made deputy commander of MFAA from 1944 to 1945 and then chief of the Civil Information and Education Section of GHQ Arts and Monuments Branch in Tokyo following Japan's surrender from August 1945 to 1946. Later received the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal and the Congressional Gold Medal for his services. After the war, was later made director of the Worcester Art Museum at Worcester, Massachusetts from 1947 to 1954 and later, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum at Boston, Massachusetts from 1955 to 1970 and later founded the International Institute for Conservation and became the first president from 1950 to 1953, was later made honorary fellow of the IIC in 1966 and the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works in 1975, died in Santa Clara, California on the 1st July 1978. James Granger (portrayed by Matt Damon) - Based on James Rorimer, Former assistant of the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York and Curator of Medieval Art at the newly open Cloisters Museum, later enlisted in the US Army as an infantryman and was later assigned to the MFAAP as an officer in France and later chief of the MFAA Section of the Seventh Army, Western Military District in Germany and took part in the recovery and preserving art previously stolen by the Nazis during the war and seizure of art collections of Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Göring. After the war, returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as director of the Cloisters Museum from 1949 to 1955 and became director of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts from 1955 until his death on the 11th May 1966. Walter Garfield (portrayed by John Goodman) - Based on Walker Hancock, Art sculptor and teacher and later Instructor of Sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1929 to 1967, later worked on the World War I Soldier Memorial in St. Louis from 1936 to 1938, enlisted in the US Army as an Army Intelligence officer in Italy and later assigned to the MFAAP in the United Kingdom from 1944. Received the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal for military services. After the war, worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad World War II Memorial from 1950 to 1952 and later supervised the carving of the Confederate Memorial at the Stone Mountain National Park near Stone Mountain, Georgia from 1964 to 1972. Later received the Pennsylvania Academy Fine Arts Medal of Honor in 1953, the National Sculpture Society's Herbert Adams Medal of Honor in 1954, National Medal of Art in 1989 and the Medal of Freedom in 1990, died in Gloucester, Massachusetts on the 30th December 1998. Donald Jefferies (portrayed by Hugh Bonneville) - Based on Ronald Balfour, British Medieval Historian and Lecturer, later assigned to the Administration of the Ministry of Information French Branch and the King's Royal Rifle Corps and later, the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force MFAAP Branch, later sent to Belgium and reported the theft of the Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, killed in a shell burst attack at Kleve in the Lower Rhine Region near the German-Dutch Border on the 10th March 1945. Richard Campbell (portrayed by Bill Murray) - Based on Robert Posey, Architectural engineer and US Army Reservist, was later assigned to the US Army Corps of Engineers in Northern Canada and later assigned to the Civil Affairs Center in the United Kingdom, later assigned to the US 3rd Army as a MFAAP Officer in France, later assigned with MFAAP Private Lincoln Kirstein and made various discovery of artworks previously stolen by the Nazis in towns throughout France and Germany, later discovered various artworks hidden by Nazis in the Altausee Salt Mine at Altausee, Austria. Received the French Legion of Honor by France and the Order of the Leopold by Belgium for his services. After the war, published the article, Protection of Cultural Materials During Combat for the College Art Journal and later worked on the United Carbide Building, the Lever House in New York and the Sears Tower in Chicago as a senior associate, retired in 1974, died in White Plains, New York on the 18th April 1977. Following his death, the Belgian Government sent a boutique of flowers for his role in returning the Ghent Altarpiece to Belgium. Jean-Claude Clermont (portrayed by Jean Dujardin) - Based on Walter Huchthausen, known as Hutch, Former architecture instructor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and later director of the Department of Design at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, later worked in various museums throughout Germany, enlisted in the US Air Force and assigned to Europe, injured in a V-1 attack on London, later assigned to the US Group Control Commission MFAAP Sub Branch as a Fine Art Advisor and later, the US 9th Army as a Monument Officer in France, was involved in the preservation of Aachen Cathedral at Aachen, North Rhineland (later renamed North Rhine-Westphalia in 1946) near the German-Dutch Border, killed after accidentally walking into unsecured territory and coming under German gunfire on the 2nd April 1945. His partner, Monument Officer Sheldon Keck also came under fire and used Huchthausen's body to shield him from being killed. Huchthausen posthumously received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart with the Oak Leaf Cluster. Preston Savitz (portrayed by Bob Balaban) - Based on Lincoln Kirstein, Art connoisseur and co-founder of the School of the American Ballet with George Balanchine, later enlisted in the US Army as a Combat Engineer and later assigned to the US Arts and Monuments Commission in the United Kingdom and the MFAAP in France from 1944 to 1945, was later assigned to the US 3rd Army as a private in 1945 and assigned to Robert Posey in Germany, later involved in the recovery of stolen art from Altausee. Later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Handel Medallion, Brandeis University Notable Achievement Award, the National Medal of Arts, National Gold Medal of Merit Award and the National Museum of Dance Mr. & Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Hall of Fame by the US and the Royal Society of Arts, Benjamin Franklin Medal by the United Kingdom for his services. After the war, foundered the New York City Ballet with Balanchine in 1948 and later commissioned the building of the New York State Theatre in 1964, retired in 1989, later died in Manhattan, New York County, New York on the 5th January 1996. Sam Epstein (portrayed by Dimitri Leonidas) - Based on Heinz Ettlinger, known as Harry, Son of German Jewish immigrants, immigrated to the US from Germany with his family on the 25th September 1938, later drafted into the US Army as an infantryman in 1944 and was sent to Europe in January 1945 and set to join the US 99th Infantry but reassigned as a possible interpreter for the Nuremberg Trials, later volunteered for the MFFAP and was assigned to the US 7th Army at Munich, Germany in May 1945 where he translated German intelligence documents, was assigned to James Rorimer as Rorimer's translator where he assisted in the interrogation of Hitler’s personal photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann, took part in the recovery of artwork, furniture, jewels and other masterpieces stolen from French Jewish Families and assisted in the return of 73 cases of stained-glass windows to the Strasbourg Cathedral previously stolen by the Nazis. After the war, was discharged from the Army in August 1946 and received a Master's Degree in mechanical engineering and business administration and worked as an engineer in 1950, was made deputy program director of a company producing guidance systems for submarine nuclear weaponry, retired in 1992 and became a co-chairman of the Wallenberg Foundation of New Jersey in the educating and remembrance of the Holocaust, later received the US Congressional Gold Medal on the 22nd October 2015, later died in Livingston, New Jersey on the 21st October 2018. Claire Simone (portrayed by Cate Blanchett) - Based on Rose Valland, French art historian and assistant museum curator at the Jeu de Paume Museum, joined the French Resistance and was made overseer of the Jeu de Paume Museum from 1941 until the Liberation of Paris in 1944 where she secretly recorded the details of more than 20,000 stolen artworks stored at the Jeu de Paume Museum, including the origin of the artworks, the dates of their arrival to Jeu de Paume and when they were sent to Germany, enlisted in the French Army and assigned to the 1st French Army in Germany as a lieutenant and then a captain on the 4th May 1945 as both a member of the Commission for the Recovery of Works of Art and a liaison for the French Government of the occupation zone in Germany. Later received the Medal of Freedom by the US, the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit by Germany, the Légion d'honneur, Commandeur of the Order of Arts and Letters and the Médaille de la Résistance by France. After the war, return to France and was made conservator of the French Musées Nationaux in 1953 and later made Chair of the Commission for the Protection of Works of Art in 1954, and wrote the book, "Le front de l'art" about her experience during the war in 1961, retired in 1968, died at her home village of Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, Isère in Southeast France on the 18th September 1980. Dr. Viktor Stahl (portrayed by Justus von Dohnányi) - Based on Hermann Bunjes, German art historian, joined the SS in 1938 and was made an administrative councilor for art protection in Paris during the Occupation from 1940 to 1942, later became the head of the Kunsthistorische Forschungsstätte (or the KHF) and served as a liaison officer for the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (known as the Reichsleiter Rosenberg Taskforce or the ERR) to the head of the Luftwaffe, Hermann Göring, fled to his family home at Trier near the German-Luxembourgish border following the Liberation of France in 1944 and started to turn files of his art dealings with Göring during the war to Monuments officers, Robert Posey and Lincoln Kirstein before being turned over to the French authorities, committed suicide in prison at Trier on the 25th July 1945. -- Last edit: 2023-05-03 16:15:04 |
