Is it a Mondeo or a Contour? If it's a Contour, it'd be a '98-'00

The only Jackass episode that I watched, and it was quite fun when the car was sent back to the rental company, after a stock-car race :D

It wasn't a stock car race, it was a demolition derby.

In French we use "stock-car" name for demolition derby, so I always use the wrong name in English :D

They actually bought the car from the rental company a few hours before getting it, but they didn't tell the guy at the counter that!

i love when they show the counter guy the damage to the car. They say something along the lines of "i got drunk and hit a dog"

They do something similar in cky2k with a (guessing between 1996-2000) chevy cav, which ends with the car catching on fire.

so a 2002 jaguar x-type is really a pimped out ford contour. cause that is the x-types platform.

No, it's a pimped-out Mondeo, because that's the original platform. :)

Hecubus CA

Also, the Contour was derived from the first generation Mondeo, while the X-Type is based on the second generation Mondeo. It's like saying the Volvo S40 and the US-spec Focus are related.

i still hate x-type's because the of the platform they are on. cheap and cruddy mondeos. it should have ben on the lincoln ls platform wich the s-type is on. the xj is on the lincoln towncar platform i heard that from a buddy who works at ford in the usa.

Not even close. The Town Car is still built on the Panther platform (and is a proper chassis), while the XJ has it's own unique unibody platform.

Right. The Panther platform has been around since 1979 in the Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Town Car. An ancient relic.

Mondeos are NOT "cheap and cruddy", actually, there the best car that size in Europe AND car of the year 1994

Ahem, james2006789, you're not really right. The Mondeo maybe not have the same bad quality and reliability as the former Ford's, but other cars in that size and age are definetely better. And it's indeed very cheap to buy. "Car of the Year" is correct - but this means nothing for its quality and reliability. See here: http://www.caroftheyear.org/pages/Previous.htm#6
If this would be an important point for the contest, the winner would always have been some Mercedes, Toyota or Porsche and definetely not cars made by Rover, Chrysler Simca or Fiat.

So, your comparing a Ford to a Mercedes and a Porsche?, very clever, a MERCEDES COSTS TWICE AS MUCH AS A FORD AND A PORSCHE? A PORSCHE, yeah, a Porsche Mondeo, so a porsche is a better midsize car than a Mondeo? THEY DONT EVEN MAKE MIDSIZE CARS! And Toyota? Ever since 1993, the Mondeo has always been a better car than the Avensis and Carina, HAVE YOU EVER READ A CAR MAGAZINE COMPARING THE TWO? OBVIOUSLY NOT! The Mondeo has almost always been at the top of its class, at least in England it has.

Even though it was just a Mondeo (YES, I'm AWARE it was called CONTOUR in North America OK?)it's pretty shocking what they did to it.

The car being a Contour wasn't the reason it was destroyed. The Jackass boys rented a car from a small rental agency. That was the car the agency gave them. It could easily have been another mid-size car, they still would have destroyed it.

I'm not sure about this. Other mid-size car? yes, except a local made, for sure.

When you rent a car, you rent by size 95% of the time. If they asked for a mid-size (or intermediate) car, usually there is no choice in brand. It's whatever the rental agency has in stock. If they had a Dodge in stock, it would have been a Dodge destroyed, or Chevy or Nissan or Toyota...etc. The point of the scene wasn't the brand and model of car being destroyed, it was about renting a car and entering the relatively new car into a demolition derby. Then returning the wrecked car to the agency and see the expression of the employee's faces. I would imagine this is why they didn't use a national brand agency (eg. Avis/Enterprise/Hertz).

Not typical for US-people - many Europeans dislike the Mondeo, too. Because it's dull, faceless and the 1st gen was not very good quality.
And in Britain there is even a derogatory nickname about Mondeo-drivers: "Mondeo-Man" ;) For faceless and dull guys with a boring life. :o

Naah, not really. The insurance will pay for it, maybe they will try to get the money back from the driver. The insurance-companies are passionless with such things, as it happens daily, that rental cars were crashed.
It can be worse, for example here: http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-7956030.html A Mercedes Sprinter, rented at an Alamo-station, was smashed up, after an immigrant-smuggler crashed with it with 100 km/h against a house-wall. It ws loaded with 27 Albanians, 7 of them died.

m.pfaffeneder DE

2011-08-14 22:07

@ingo: But the Mondeo is a very favoured family car, above all the Turnier. And since the 2000+ Mondeo came on the market, the quality is very good. And so are the engines, the chassis, ride comfort and its enormous space. Sorry that I´m saying this, but every Opel, especially the Vectra has always been an Old-Man´s-Car.

Sandie SX

2011-08-14 22:16

Mondeo man was less to do with a faceless, boring guy and more related to wealth and social class.

At the time the Mondeo (and before the Sierra) was very common with men who had families and as such drove larger saloons or hatchbacks. (it is not as much the case nowadays) so it tended to fit. Mondeo man may also have drove a Vectra, Passat, Laguna etc. Mondeo was used as it was the most popular car of that type.

Think that little fender badge said LX trim, because I could faintly make out an X on it.

Oregon plate returns no results, probabaly because it died hilariously before having any records.
