jpts ◊ 2015-11-18 06:42	This episode was about World Trade Center Bombing that occurred in the underground carpark of World Trade Center in New York on the 26th February 1993. In late 1994, the mastermind of the WTC Bombing, Ramzi Yousef fled to The Philippines where he planned "Operation Bojinka" and later boarded Philippines Airlines 434 to Tokyo via Cebu on the 11th December 1994 and placed a bomb under his seat and had got off at Cebu. The bomb killed a passenger who was sitting in the seat that the bomb was under and had also injured 10 other nearby, but lucky, the plane was able to land at the Naha International Airport. The bombing of PAL 434 was a test of the operation. This operation was split into three phases: Phase 1 - Assassinate Pope John Paul II as he is in The Philippines for the World Youth Day 1995 celebrations. This phase was due to take place on the 15th January 1995, the last day of the celebrations and would involve a suicide bomber disguised as a priest to get close to the Pope's motorcade, so he could detonate the bomb. Prior to January 1995, at least 20 terrorists were trained by Yousef to carry out Phase 1, the assassination of the Pope was to diverted attention from Phase 2. Phase 2 - Place bombs on 11 different US-bound commercial flights. Phase 2 would involved 5 terrorists to place the bombs on 11 different American flights heading to the US from Southeast Asia and East Asia, with each terrorist including Yousef using codenames and given a list of American Flights to target: Zyed - Yousef's codename, was to target North-West Airlines Flight 30 from Manilla to Los Angeles via Seoul, a United Airlines flight from Seoul to Honolulu via Taipei and a another United Airlines flight from Taipei to San Francisco via Bangkok before heading to Karachi, Pakistan. Obaid - Codename of Yousef's associate, Abdul Hakim Murad, was to target United Airlines Flight 80 from Singapore to Los Angeles via Hong Kong and a another United Airlines flight on the same route back to Singapore (which would later head to San Francisco via Hong Kong) before heading to Lahore, Pakistan. Majbos - Was to target United Airlines flight from Taipei to Los Angeles via Tokyo and another United Airlines flight from Tokyo to New York via Hong Kong before heading to Karachi, Pakistan. Maroka - Was to target North-West Airlines Flight 6 from Manilla to Chicago via Tokyo and a another North-West Airlines flight from Tokyo to New York via Hong Kong before heading to Karachi, Pakistan. Mirqas - Was to target United Airlines Flight 806 from Manilla to San Francisco via Seoul and Delta Air Lines Flight 59 from Seoul to Bangkok via Taipei before heading to Karachi, Pakistan. Phase 3 - Crash a small plane into the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency at Langley, Virginia. This phase involved Yousef's associate, Murad either buying, renting or hijacking a small plane (as Murad trained as a pilot in the US) to fly the plane and crash it into the CIA Headquarters. Phase 3 had a alternate plan to hijack a 12th commercial flight for the attack as the Manilla Cell were frustrated with the explosives. This operation was scrapped on the night of the 6th January 1995, when the fire service were called to deal with a small fire in one of flats and discovered that the flat had contain several gallons of chemicals, two grape juice bottles filled with nitroglycerin, circuit breakers, watches, timers, bomb making manuals, and various maps of Manila marked with the route that the pope's motorcade was going to take when he arrived on the 12th January. When the Philippines National Police were called, one of the flat's occupants and Yousef's accomplice, Murad returned to grab Yousef's laptop containing the targeted flights and was spotted by one of the officers and tried to fled but was arrested after he had tripped over a tree branch after being fired upon by one of the attending officer. Under interrogation, Murad admitted that Yousef was responsible for the bombing of PAL 434, after the raid of Yousef's Manilla flat, Yousef's fled to Thailand on the 31st January 1995 where met with an associate, Istaique Parker who flew with Yousef to Pakistan, arriving on the 2nd February 1995. Five days later on the 7th February, acting on a tip off from Parker, Yousef was arrested by agents of the Pakistani intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence and the US Diplomatic Security Service. -- Last edit: 2022-03-31 16:58:16
