It seems to be a Phantom III, a pre war perhaps 1936 onwards Sedanca de Ville, the front roof looks removable. The wheel discs look pre war, the round rear upper corner of the rear door and the rear fender have more pre war flavour. The fender mounted spare tires require a longer wheel base, the Wraith tended to be shorter wheel based and in the books 'Those Elegant Rolls Royce'(for pre war models) and 'Elegance Continues'(Post War models) Wraiths not often carry side spare tires. It looks like a James Young.

2samyuk: maybe I am mistaken, but pre war were called Wraith and post war Silver Wraith.. and this really seems to be too small for a Phantom.

True, the car is a bit small, and Phantom IIIs were also very rare

Rolls royce Phantom III Sedanca de Ville by Arthur Mulliner (not H.J.), owned for many years by cardealer Raymond Way in th UK and winner of many concours délegance. Very luxuriously appointed with cocktailbars, tables, typewiter etc.

As Juergensmuda identified it as a Wraith, I do not known... (as he is usually right for these cars)

Yes it works :) Just one remark: it is better to save photos to JPEG format rather than PNG for publishing them on the web ;)

Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help me. I am writing a book about the controversial British psychiatrist Dr William Sargant and am trying to clear up a mystery about a Rolls Royce he owned throughout the 1970s and 1980s. A Dorset neighbour of his recalls it was a black Rolls Royce, possibly with the number plate EGC1. Does anyone know what happened to the Phantom III Sedanca de Ville that features in this thread and appeared in various films in the 1960s? Any info much appreciated!

@JonStock - it seems to have been travelling the globe this century - seen in 2015 at Durban classic show in South Africa and currently (unless this is a fossilised listing??) for sale in California.

However DVLA shows current UK registration - ✓ Taxed Vehicle EGC1 Tax due: 1 April 2025,
Date of first registration August 1988
Year of manufacture 1937
Date of last V5C (logbook) issued 4 November 2019 (which is the last time it officially changed hands)

Another site says Number of owners 7 to date. It failed a UK MOT in 2009 with a long list of problems (mainly dodgy brakes and lights) which suggests a good resto/refurb was needed afterwards, maybe from disuse/time in storage??

"This imposing 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III is one of only two bodied as Sedanca de Ville by Mulliner of London."

Thanks very much @dsl. I've been badgering the DVLA for a week now, checking on various permutations of the number plate. The latest theory from someone who knew Sargant is that the number plate on his black Rolls Royce was "ECT1"... That's currently on an Audi TT but the DVLA won't tell me if it's ever been attached to a Rolls.

I’m pleased to end the mystery around this car. It was originally registered in 1937 with the registration number EGC1 and has been in my ownership for the last 7 years. Its history is entirely comprehensive and most importantly the car was owned originally by Mr Raymond Way from 1937-1965. Raymond Way owned a major UK car sales business and enjoyed celebrity status. And he moved amongst celebrities including Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers who were filmed with the car extensively in the film The Millionairess. The car also featured in a later film with Elizabeth Taylor. EGC1 is a 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom 3, coachwork by Arthur Mulliner with a sedanca style roof by Thrupp & Mayberly. The car has been restored to a very high standard and runs beautifully. It won the Salon Prive Award ‘Fit for a King’ in 2021. This was a pandemic year but the event being an outdoor one was able to proceed. The car resides in West Sussex. I am very happy to show the car on request to those with a keen interest to know more about it and especially to connect it to other historical research. I will post pictures in the next few days.
