James Avery (Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and also the voice of Shredder from the Teenage Mutant Ninja/Hero Turtles cartoon) plays the strict driving instructor.

The test that Corey Haim is put through in this film must be about 100 times harder than the real US DMV driving test (which I've heard is a doddle!).

Not knowing if this one has third taillight or not. The front end introduced in 1985 1/2 model year.

They start in one with a white grille, but all the next scenes show one with a black grille:

Ah...a classic 80's 7-Eleven 12oz coffee cup. Nice. :)

In the parallel parking thumbnail, it does not have a third brake light making a 1985 model in that scene.

There are at least three Ford Escorts in this picture :p

I looked pretty close. It's four Escorts, two Pontiac T-1000s.

Could be accurate mix of model years and contract bids. Did California issue separate manual endorsements and auto-only licenses as late as 1988? Maybe one fleet order was for manual cars and the other for automatics. In any case this movie's the only time I'd ever seen DMV fleet cars being used for driving tests.
