SU xxxx was a Kincardine series which dribbled out very slowly 1904 to 1961. No data available before 1929, with the first 1929 issue being 2450. We've identified this vehicle using the details you provided PANHARDETLEAVSSOR UNKNOWN 1932 Registration number: SU 2824 Body type: Saloon Colour: Maroon Date of first registration: August 1932 ... which falls within the 1932 batch (2769 to 2845) near the end. Plate dates for UK cars older than 1922 often throw up wobblies, as there was no centralised system previously, and we've had several "newer" re-regs on ancient stuff. Also possible this was a 1932 import after many years elsewhere. The only solid info seems to be the auction catalogue date of 1920, but they're not always accurate ... DVLA says Export marker No Vehicle status Not taxed for on road use Date of last V5C (logbook) issued 27 October 1983 ... which suggests it's still around, probably as an exhibit in a museum or collection. |

I guess it is indeed a Type X-29, and maybe the picture was somewhat cut down to size to where it looks smaller than how long the X-29 was stated to be. I ended up buying that auction catalogue on eBay. Here's the information it gave. 1920 PANHARD ET LEVASSOR "X 29" LIMOUSINE Reg. No. SU 2824 Engine No. X29-52606, Chassis No. 52606, four cylinders, 27-3 h.p., sleeve valves, four forward and one reverse gears, two-wheel rod-operated brakes. This car was unused by the original owner between 1932 and 1962 when the bodywork was removed and the chassis, with modified temporary bodywork (likely referring to the tourer body in this scene and in the background during the opening race scenes), appeared in the film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". The elegant coachwork, now refitted, has been re-painted maroon. The trim is the original. The spare wheel is carried on a side mount. This is how it looked when we see it parked in Mr. Coggins' garage. I guessed they filmed this scene sometimes later after the "Roses of Success" scene. I have a picture of it in the book, but I'm not able to add it. -- Last edit: 2025-04-08 03:59:33 |
