Said boxer is played by legendary actor James Cagney in his final screen appearance, bringing a close to a career that included some of the best gangster and noir films of the 1930s and '40s. His trainer is played by Art Carney. Footage from the 1932 Cagney sports drama Winner Take All is used to depict Joe in his younger years.
