1979 Chevrolet C-10 Custom Deluxe "Fleetside". 1979 was the first year that the headlight bezels wrapped around the lower turn signal lenses. |

In addition to the updated grille trim, also note the small styling detail added to the nose (end of the hood) which flanks the hood outline above the grille. It shows up better here in this capture with the dark blue paint and higher quality capture. This mini nip/tuck is strange, not only for the fact that it lasted for only two model years, but also for the fact that it came just before the rounded-line generation received an all-new snout for the 1981 model year. It begs the question: "Why add that, when a complete front end redesign was due in two model years?" Perhaps a 1981 front end redesign was not premeditated, but more an unplanned response to the 1979 energy crisis. Maybe we will never know why they did that. It’s a nice conversation piece though. |

How restyling can be an response to energy crisis?? |

^ less wind resistance = better fuel economy = less fuel used |

Better economy? How much percents of MPG? |

Oh, I was talking about hood trim , not about whole front. |

It was not only a new face that the rounded-line’s received. A aerodynamic front spoiler was added, over 300 lbs (136 kgs) of weight was dropped, and a updated 5.0 liter pushrod 305 CID small block V-8 with electronic spark control became available as a economy V-8. About a year later the Turbo Hydra-Matic 700R4 gearbox made its début, the first 4-speed automatic gearbox with turbine torque converter to ever be used in a GM full-size pickup. The numerically low overdrive helped increase fuel efficiency. Post facelifted rounded-lines could return a MPG rating of around 19 city, and 25 highway. Obviously not with four-wheel drive or V-8 engines, but for any full-size leviathan, these were impressive numbers. On par with most of today’s pickups and utilities and actually better than the newest generation of GM pickups and utilities. The "special economy version" (only available with the diesel 6.2 liter 379 CID V-8) could clip 23 city, and 31 highway. |
