Actually not a bad idea of the three, well in this case two. It´s only a bit slow, noisy and quite uncomfortable.

Poor S8! How do they use such one of the best luxury sedan ever built for this stupid thing? :o
... I haven't seen the episode yet, did they destroy or ruin it?

The Audi will be fine. It probably won't be too difficult to put the wheels back on.

It was a decent enough idea that might have had some value if they hadn't obviously botched the application for cheap laughs. Even by their standards it was obviously rigged (see the bit where Clarkson drove his train so fast down the wrong side of the tracks) and probably filmed on a disused stretch of railway.

It was filmed on the preserved Great Central Railway, between Leicester and Loughborough. It's the only heritage railway (in the UK, anyway) with double track.

In German there is even an own term for them, "Schienenbus": http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schienenbus See the links to the plenty of versions, also in other countries.

Yes 2 carraiges got destroyed, Buffet Carraige by fire and Scum Class Carraige smashed by a train on the opposite track.

However good it may have been as a new vehicle, the cost of running a 4 litre German luxobarge in this country means that by the time it is a few years and a hundred or two thousand miles old it is virtually a piece of worthless junk. My Mercédès, now two years old, would have cost me over £3 per mile had I changed it on the quote offered to me against a new plug in hybrid, and as it has only a 2.2 litre engine it would have been of greater interest in the used market, diesel or not.

Needless to say, I am not changing it yet!
