A 1971-72 Chevrolet C-20 or C-30 pickup. The camper is a slide-in type loaded in the back. Definitley not a motor home of any class. |

"Campers" are not built as such. They are simply pick-up trucks (the most common being made by Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, etc.) and the "camping enclosure" is the (removable) pay-load. Most of the latter are built in Indiana. I bought a Dodge pick-up in 1978 and added a "camper enclosure" in Elkhart, IN. After touring the USA we brought it back to Switzerland, where the DOT gave me a hard time. I couldn't have a "truck" AND a "camper"; there was NO such vehicle in the "rule book"; I would have to choose between one or the other. Well, I fought the bureaucrats and won! Finally, I was issued TWO titles, the first one for a "truck", the other for a "camping car" [called a "vehicule d'habitation", in French]. I later sold it to a guy in the canton (state) next door [like S. Carolina is next door to Georgia]. He had to go through the same hassle. Just to tell you the Swiss DOT guys are among the strictest I've ever had to deal with [hey, they wanted me to "shave" the fins off my '60 Eldorado !!!]. If it's not "madatory", by the book, then it's "strictly ptrohibited" ...until, one day, it becomes "madatory" (like the third brake light in the rear wiondow!). |
