Is the ugly body-kit identifyable? It was really expensive and typical 80ies-style, but even today you'll push up the value of the car, if you will pimp it back to the original.

Might be an AMG bumper; it does not have the full Wide Body kit as the fenders have not been flared - Link to "media.photobucket.com"

The picture doesn't do any justice to this jem of a car. The most significant feature cannot be seen on this picture but I will come to that later. The car itself is a Mercedes 500 SEC Magic-Top converted around 1984/85 by the well known company "B&B". At least they were well known here in Germany at the time (1976-1986). The company was based in Frankfurt and they did some very extreme conversions to Porsches, Mercedes and a series of VW Polos and VW Golfs amongst others.
This car used in the episode of "Tatort" was in fact a convertible even though it doesnt look like one. The car had a retractable steel roof that moved electrically down onto the boot/trunk. This very car was even used without the owners permission for this episode and is the only vehicle that stayed in Germany. All the others were made for customers in the US or Arabia.
A couple of years back this very car was sold on eBay-Germany and is presumable still around.

I wasn't too sure if it was OK for me to post pictures or links within a topic.
Being interested in anything about Buchmann & Buchmann ( B&B ) I am still searching for this Episode. If anyone can be of help, please let me know.

Concerning the original car, the B&B Magic-Top. Around 1984/85 the toy-car company "Corgi" announced in one of its brochures a model of the "Magic-Top" in 1:43 scale with opening doors and working retractable roof. It was pictured in a brochure but the model was never released. Does anyone know more about it ?

@hf71 - nothing definite as I can't find any reference. Corgi went bust in autumn 83 and many models were stopped/disappeared before production resumed under new owners in 84. They had launched the Corgitronics range in 1981 with remotely activated working features and this may have included the planned Magic Top, but the range disappeared with the 1983 closure. You could try emailing the Corgi Collectors Club - collectorclubs@questar.co.uk - and mark it for attention of Susan Pownall who is very helpful and knows a lot about Corgi in the 1980s.

Thanks for the info "dsl".
Can you imagine how I always went to town (15 kms away) for nearly a year as a teenager and going to the local toy-shops with the intention to get my hands on this car ? Can you imagine how my disappointment was, when I got to know that my toy-car of my dreams was never to be ?

The car was promoted as a normal die-cast 1:43. Nothing electric on it.

Cheers again O_-

The Mercedes Magic-Top was shown in the 1986 Corgi pocket catalog, so after the Mettoy era. But was clearly a hand-carved mockup.
