I remember a 500 SEL in this movie... |

Cars from this movie needs of other detailed shots: I don't see this movie since long time, but I remember that they possibly used two cars: for the early and internal shots a '91 600 SEL, for the chase (and the explosion), a lower version with '94 model blinkers... |

That car is 500SEL 1991. |

I recordered on VHS this movie and I analyzed accurately the chase: I'm pretty sure that they used two W140s. Both of them were 1991-94 500 SEL models, grey and equipped with black leather seats, wooden interior ornaments and open roof. Great capturing are possible. These two cars were used alternately, making some continuity errors (like the lights: in a shot it has orange turn-blinkers, in the successive it seems to have white tailights, but they're actually broken; or the different rear-damage). Between the 2 cars, one was used for minor stunts and not so damaged (especially bumpers and glasses), the other was used for much more time and heavily damaged (e.g. that reverse jump...). Btw, they were driven in a very hard way, without destroying them...They're cars nearly impossible to kill! ![]() -- Last edit: 2007-02-13 17:46:14 |

Would it not be better for the main picture to be either the 5th or 10th picture along? |
◊ 2007-07-01 14:25 |
In the main picture the car is still intact and less blurred through motion. Also the 5th picture is being used for the Volkswagen Polo. BTW: Who named it 500 SEL? There are no badges on the car. Just guesswork? |

Benny, probably, as he seems to have identified it (I suppose on the basis of some details?) |

... or on the basis that it sounds cool? ![]() So far I cannot spot any differences. http://www.mb-w140.de/ ![]() |

Here is the video of the chase, maybe you can spot some identification on the car: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cQZYAd3g8-g -- Last edit: 2013-03-24 14:42:22 (G-MANN) |

Its not his fault, the movie producers chose the cars for the chase. Plus, there was probably a stuntman in the car (and not George Clooney) when it crashes. And btw, we still write that curse with two 's' ![]() -- Last edit: 2009-01-12 22:39:54 |

Let's not cry so much for that car! Mercedes-Benz S-class has been much more presentable and elegant before and after this '91 particular model.Tall like a church & uncharming like a battle tunk, might be ideal to crash other cars in an action movie but not exactly adapted as a "good taste" ambassador around the world. We can only hate George Clooney's choice (if he wants to appear as a sophisticated guy) to drive something as vulgar as a 10 year rustfree guaranty!! It was fortunately the only S-class that had a so breef year production.. -- Last edit: 2009-01-20 11:25:00 |

I think Alexander was right, where's the evidence that this is a 500SEL? -- Last edit: 2012-02-05 22:03:38 |

Spotted this film on TV again so I've been reminded of this. It gets smashed around a lot so multiple cars would been used and none have a model number badge on the back. It has the original tailight design and amber front indicators so Benny was right about the year range but I don't how he would have known the engine size. I think it's LWB though. PS. I've done some archiving and deleting of comments to tidy up (main page, Mercedes S-Class, BMW 520) The comments I deleted were just stuff about aspect ratios, incorrect ID's and old pictures (which have since been replaced by Alexander's DVD captures), plus some of the usual spammy "argghhh! they are bastards to wreck Mercedes S-Klasse! This film SUCKKKED!!" comments posted years ago ![]() -- Last edit: 2013-03-24 15:11:56 |

Ingo, what do you make of this plate? (this scene is set in Austria but it was filmed in Bratislava) |
◊ 2013-03-25 23:50 |
I'll leave the Mercedes to ingo, but the plate on the Polo is definitely fake. ![]() ![]() |
◊ 2013-03-25 23:51 |
all plates here are faked |

Just took an excellent screenshot of the 500 SEL when it was picking up Clooney and Kidman. One of the only few moments we see this W140 nice as new! (This is my first comment here and I dedicate this to the SEL kekeke...): http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s594/Jasper_Poon/P1_zps8e2ea390.png -- Last edit: 2013-05-26 00:13:04 (Neon) |

Thanks, I replaced the main picture with that one ![]() The old one is still visible as 1st pic of Alexander's series. |
◊ 2013-05-27 17:47 |
Still this is listed as 500SEL despite no one giving any evidence that is (and of course multiple cars were probably used) The ones who said 500SEL probably just plucked it out of the air. -- Last edit: 2013-05-27 17:50:07 |

You could always have removed it yourself ![]() -- Last edit: 2013-05-27 18:00:25 |

Just wasn't totally sure if I was missing some detail. |

"out of the air"? Those who posted comments at the top usually were identifying accurately the Mercedes models, back then in 2006. I do not see why we should not keep that info until proven otherwise (other model or not identifiable, from someone knowing these models well). -- Last edit: 2013-05-28 17:17:59 |

I still don't know why George Clooney's character reversed into the BMW until its tank ruptured. What the hell was he trying to do? |

Set the bad guys' car on fire, or simply crush it enough. |
