Of the 55 two-person teams who entered the 1958 Alpine Rally just 25 completed the event.

Back in the day, when rallies were real rallies instead of today's noddy Scalextric format and the cars were recognisable, attrition rates were very high. Which conversely meant manufacturers made huge efforts to participate and get prizes, so they could triumphantly advertise these achievements, which is why Monte, RAC, East African Safari, Alpine etc were so famous. There was one event - 1972 Bandama/Ivory Coast rally - where there were no finishers by the end.
