Leyland Levend:
Pablito wrote Hi, this Leyland was not a "Panther". It was an Olympic Series III, branded as "Levend" for turkish market. Leyland "Worldmaster" chasis.

@San: Your reference uses the word "Recovery" because the bus in the photo was converted into a tow truck. The bus in the movie is, obviously, not a tow truck.

Quote Leyland "Levend" Recovery

In a previous post I have referred to the 300 Leyland "Olympic"s that were new to Istanbul, Turkey, between 1966 and 1970, and I believe that they were actually driven overland on delivery. I have also referred to the fact that the Turks took exception to the "Olympic" name and so they were badged as "Levend", being the name of a Turkish soldier. Here, on my 1989 visit to Istanbul, amongst the survivors was one converted to a breakdown wagon.

So Panther or not?
If not, should others be changed?

Body by MCW. Not built in Turkey.

Quote On a recent visit to Istanbul primarily for an important football match, Robert Missen also made time to explore the Turkish city’s transport system and was touched to see that it still holds Old Mother Leyland in fond regard.

A poster from 2021 marking 150 years of public transport features an MCW-bodied Leyland as one of two significant vehicles that entered the fleet of city operator IETT — Istanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel or Istanbul Electric Tram & Tunnel Company if you prefer — in 1968. The poster was in one of the two stations of the Tünel, an underground funicular railway opened in 1871 and the world’s second oldest underground after London’s.

The Leyland was one of an order for 300 of what Leyland and MCW normally called the Olympic, but these 36ft high-capacity standee single-deckers were instead called Levend after a crack Turkish soldier as friction between Turkey and Greece made it difficult for the Turks to buy buses with a Greek name.

The late Doug Jack explained all this in his definitive history of the manufacturer, The Leyland Bus, in 1977 and 1984, and also that they were fully built up at MCW’s Elmdon works and driven overland to Turkey, registered temporarily in Warwickshire for that purpose. One of the first of the 300 was exhibited at the Commercial Motor Show at Earls Court in London in September 1968.
