To me it would be like if you said Toshiba or Sony or Apple made cars |

Wonder if the Mclaren F1 and Smart car fit into this category? |

I think South Korea has very protectionist policies regarding it's auto industry, so it's worthwhile for a (very) large company like Samsung to enter a captive import deal with some foreign auto manufacturer. Nissan (in this case) gets to make sales that wouldn't have been possible if they'd imported the cars themselves, and Samsung gets to sell cars (albeit only in their home market) for a relatively minimal investment. (I'm not sure if Samsung actually has to manufacture the cars in South Korea to get around the import taxation, but even if that's the case Nissan would still be taking care of all the production design, research and development, etc.) tali: I know Smart was originally a partnership of Daimler-Benz and Swatch, but how does McLaren fit in that category? They've always made cars. |

Toshiba doesn't make cars, but they did built trolleybuses for Mexico City in the 1980s. http://www.ste.df.gob.mx/servicios/flotaveh.html -- Last edit: 2008-10-29 07:52:04 |

And we have Mitsubishi and Daewoo which do not make only cars About Samsung Motors, now they are owned by Renault, so I guess that they will also have rebadged Renault in addition of the rebadged Nissan... e.g. the Smasung QM5 / Renault Koleos (and the Renault is actually build by Samsung). That will allow Renault to easily sold their models in South-Korea, where importation of foreign cars is not as easy as in some other countries. There is also the Renault Safrane currently sold in Middle-East which is just a rebadged Samsung SM5! -- Last edit: 2008-10-29 10:43:59 |

Renault Samsung Motors is owned 80.1% by Renault and 19.9% by Samsung Card. The Samsung group established Samsung Motors in 1994 but sold a majority stake to Renault as a result of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_Samsung_Motors Daewoo was a big conglomerate which was dismantled in 1999. The car division was bought by GM, the truck division was bought by Tata, and there are numerous other Daewoo companies (buses, electronics, shipbuilding, etc.) now all separate from one another. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daewoo Mitsubishi is, according to Wikipedia, "a Japanese conglomerate consisting of a range of autonomous businesses which share the Mitsubishi brand, trademark and legacy...[which] form a loose entity, the Mitsubishi Keiretsu". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi |
