Plate hiccups - VGT 831G was a bronze Escort 1300; nothing now for other possible London combos - eg VGF, VGY, but all were early 69.

Why do you need to bother? The plate ends in G, it's got Minx written on the door, and it's a nice clear picture.

I read DSL's comment as something odd about VGY for 69 , but may have mis interpreted it.

Quite right too, but it just seemed strange to resort to the “table look-up” cop out system, when there was no need. One of my attempts to stave off the deleterious effect of old age is to try to use my memory whenever possible. Dunno if it works or not but I do try.

I have a strange fascination with number plates , and DSL seems to have the number plate key to all facts :)

It's a Feb 69 plate (or at least 836G was - another blue Hillman, and with 1496cc a Minx so likely a Met police bulk order).

Thank you kind Sir, but I'd never claim all of the facts - I'll settle for a lot of them. "Table look-ups" are just one element of an intensive research strategy deployed from my Glasgow Investigation Facility, both to confirm exact IDs where possible, and to try to eliminate/minimise uncertainties. So while this is a fairly straightforward case for the team to resolve, at least the plate is probably solid, and if a record had still existed it would have thrown up engine size - maybe showing the 1725 Minx option.

But stepping back from fairly boggo Rootes-jewels, is the principle any different from consulting dense tomes for eg RR/Bentley specific chassis numbers?? We're all basically pointy-head nerds who enjoy the pursuit of minutiae as far as we can follow the threads, and between us with our collective expertises, we each bring our own tool-kits. Long may such diversity thrive.

Even if it brings some truly bizarre model year identifications ....

Series was filmed around Rochester so think it is Kent Police.
Some may have been real Police vehicles or the props man did a real good job finding all these dark blue Hillmans and Fords !

My point is that I try very hard to identify the things without opening a book or resorting to cutting and pasting a record. The books come out if I need to get into detail, which with twenties and thirties cars occurs quite a lot. Agreed it ain’t very intellectual, but it’s about the best I’ve got, and at least I don’t cut and paste. It is also necessary to allow me to be able to provide Chassis #s and first owner detail on Bentleys, I am far from knowing all of ‘em.

Maybe still a slight local legacy allegiance to Rootes, who originally established their empire from Canterbury?? Although by late 60s, these links would have been stretched to little more than nostalgia ....
