It´s a 1978, the first year of the Turbo. It could be enough to call SAAB Turbo, even if it is a 99. These first cars were just labeled Turbo.

It is definitely a Saab 99 Turbo. 1978 was the year Saab introduced the turbo on its 99 model (although in 1977 they created a fleet of 100 test turbos that were distributed to press and other people for a year of beta testing - some of these are still on the road). They immediately replaced the 99 Turbo with the 900 in 1979 in the US but continued to make the 99 turbo until 1982 in other parts of the world. The distinctive 'Inca' rims shown in this photo were specially designed for this model to symbolize the turbo turbine.

99 is the model name, not the chassis code. It should be changer to Make: SAAB, Model: 99 Turbo.

But DAF555 said that the first ones were just named "Turbo"

Hmm.... I've never seen that documented. To my knowledge, it was always 99 Turbo.

Take a look at the brochure for sale on Ebay. Model names listed as GL, GLE, EMS and Turbo. That should be documentation enough, no?

I think we have different names for different markets - UK seems always 99 Turbo (eg Link to "www.autocar.co.uk" and http://www.saabtrader.co.uk/roadtest_11_01.htm - see the top thumb on right which looks like brochure photo). As this entry is UK car I think it should be 99 Turbo. Other markets - as tonkatracker's brochure link -may differ ....

I really don't know. It was 99 Turbo in the U.S., but we only got it for one year.

Well the brochure I linked is a US-Spec brochure and shows it called simply Turbo. but I have no idea about the UK.

IIRC this was actually Phil Oakey's daily driver at the time.

I'm discovering this, and like everybody bar one, I've only known that car as a "99 Turbo". It turns out the US-market cars had only "Turbo" badges, but the non-US-spec ones were called 99 Turbo.
