There is a company that manufactures new Laser 917s, and here is the link if anyone is interested (and has a big pocket, since the prices for new turnkey cars are high!): http://www.laser917.com/ |

FYI - I purchased a Laser 917 in the fall of 1977 from Elite Enterprises in Cokato, MN. This was shortly after (Gerry Knapp, owner) had received an order from Disney Studios for two (2) completely built and road-ready Laser 917s. He shipped them to Monte Carlo, France. He told me that after they arrived, Disney began initial shooting of some of the race scenes. But the red metal-flake paint was sparkling in the bright Monte Carlo sun and was very distracting. So Disney had them repainted in a non-metal-flake red. And yes, I agree - I saw the movie (Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo) and the driver of the Laser 917 was not very competent. There are many instances where he seems to have trouble with over-steer on the hair-pin curves. |

I can spot such exsotics as Zagato, Pantera, Elan, Stratos, etc. So why couldn`t they get a REAL Porsche 917 for this movie, instead of this mockery? And no wonder it over-steers. It`s a VW Beetle with a rear that could double as a battering ram. -- Last edit: 2012-08-05 19:59:08 |

This is definetly the coolest rival in the movie! How many of them were made? -- Last edit: 2013-04-19 19:05:01 |
