MB has been, for the last 25-30 years, using 800 codes in the build sheets to indicate the internal model year for the vehicle. Not every country adheres to these standards which leads to confusion. smart is owned by MB so that is why you will see the build sheet codes. Edit: For example the MB might be built March of 2005 then the database in that specific country would list as a 2005.
