It is the 1303 model. |

What's the dark green car far left? Something European, I'd say. By the front lamps I thought at first at a US-Peugeot 504, but it's something two-door. |

Maybe Reliant Scimitar SE5 or 6? I know they're as scarce as hens' teeth in the USA, but there's something very familiar about the headlights and the shape of the rear side window ... and if we think it is it might be worth listing for rarity value alone. -- Last edit: 2009-01-04 13:11:00 |

Yes, a Scimitar could be possible, I thought about it, too (by the shape of the back side window), but I wasn't sure because of the edge of the front hood around the lamps. Also something Italian came into my mind. You're also right about its rarity in the USA. Since a while I have the impression, that we have the biggest chance to recognize really rare European cars in the USA, when we are looking for US-movies from between 1965 and 1975 and then especially for all junkyard-scenes. So a friendly to all pic-contributors over here: please organize as many as possible junkyard-scenes. Not only US-junkyard-scenes are welcome, also in other countries there were absolute rare cars to find in 50ies and 60ies. A propos rarity. I'm more and more convinced, that in this movie you also can see a hyper-rare US-spec Audi Super 90: /vehicle_207826-Toyota-Land-Cruiser.html |

I would like it to be a Reliant Scimitar but sorry it looks like a Pontiac Firebird to me with an endura-rubber front late 1960s? I think the rear glass shape is not really clearly seen. -- Last edit: 2009-01-04 13:38:46 |

Ah, thanks for the second pic - it's a Ford Capri II -- Last edit: 2009-01-04 18:20:27 |

Indeed a Capri II (without Ford in USA). Anyway not many of them listed on this site... |

Correction: it's the 1973-only Super Beetle, as it hasn't the ugly 1974+ bumpers, which were positioned higher at this model, too. |

Note the two Sheriff's Department units parked behind the Capri. You can see the deputies inside but they do not join the chase at this point. |

I was curious about the color, so I looked it up and found out that brown wasn't offered for 1973. In fact, the only times it was offered were in 1955 (Texas Brown), 1977 (Panama Brown), and 1979 (Brazil Brown Metallic). So this Super Beetle was definitely repainted, which is strange because it was brand-new at the time of filming. -- Last edit: 2024-07-16 20:14:24 |

There was a 1973 Maroon Glace model, 1,000 made (in Agate Brown L98Z, else used for 1974 Audi, looks similar to L86Z) They had the chrome around the rear vents, oddly also the C-pillar vents (like 1971-72) Seen with also foglamps (may not fit US bumper brackets), front wing stone chip protection, door handle shield, and Fuchs style wheel covers No further evidence they even made it across the pond, but it could be one |

That would be quite interesting! That's a good guess, though it looks like Agate Brown Metallic on the Marron Glace is different than what we see here, which is more of a rich golden brown color. Agate Brown looks almost like a grey brown. http://sebeetles.com/marron_glace/ http://marronglace.free.fr/M_205_59.php The one in the film is also missing its Fuchs-style wheel covers and has added bumperettes (bumper guards), so I don't think it's a Marron Glace. Even if it was, it would have been imported from France. Not impossible, but certainly less likely than it just being a US-spec model with a custom paint job (remember that paint jobs were way cheaper back then, and people having their new cars repainted wasn't that far out of the ordinary... so I kind of retract my earlier statement). During this era, the majority of private imports were done by US military members, since the shipping for them was free. I met a 91-year-old US Navy veteran 10 years ago who still had his 1973 Peugeot 504 that he had imported new from France after he had been stationed there. But I digress. I think given the information we have, it was probably a just a normal US-spec model with custom paint. -- Last edit: 2024-07-31 00:29:23 |
